High School: Competed for Hill City where he was a multiple varsity letter award winner in basketball, football, track and cross country. Coy finished 3rd at the high school state meet as a senior in a time of 16:37.3.

Freshman: Competed for the University of South Dakota in the fall.  Was a member of the national runner-up 4 x 800-meter relay team at the 2010 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships that clocked at DSU school record time of 7;43.32 and attained All-American status.  During the outdoor season, he broke the 800-meter school record with a 1:52.02 clocking at the USF Invitational.  Was a member of the 3rd place 4 x 800-meter relay team at the 2010 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships that clocked a DSU school record time of 7:30.74, which was also less than a second off of the all-time South Dakota Collegiate record and attained All-American status.

Sophomore:  Won his first collegiate cross country meet at the DWU Invitational.  Placed 28th at Roy Griak Invitational.  Placed third at the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) Cross Country Conference Championships and received DAC All-Conference status.  Placed 92nd at the 2012 NAIA Cross Country National Championships.  Won the 800-meter and one-mile runs at the 2011 NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships and achieved All-American status.  Ran 2:25.47 in the 1000-meter prelims to set a DSU school record.  Won the 1500-meter run at Sioux City Relays.  Won the South Dakota state Twilight 1500-meter race with his personal best of 3:52.63.  Won the 800-meter run at the 2011 DAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships and received DAC All-Conference status.  Placed 20th in the 800-meter at the 2011 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.

Junior:  Placed 19th at the Roy Griak Invitational.  Placed 2nd at the Mount Marty Invitational with a time of 25:41.31.  Placed third at the 2011 Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Cross Country Championships with his personal best time of 25:19, and received A.I.I. All-Conference honors.  Placed 84th at the 2011 NAIA Cross Country National Championships.  Placed third in the mile at the 2012 Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in a personal best and a DSU school record time of 4:11.12.  Won the 1000-meters at the 2012 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships in a DSU school record and South Dakota Collegiate record time of 2:24.94, receiving All-American honors and was the first male athlete to win a national championships in DSU history.  Won the Dordt Invitational in the 800-meter race.  Won the 1500-meters at the Red Raider Open.  Won the 800-meters at the USF Invitational.  Placed 4th in the 1500-meter run at the 2012 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in a DSU school record time of 3:47.66 and received All-American honors.
