Trojans drop four matches at USF Halloween Tournament

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Dakota State could not get a win out from the University of Sioux Falls Halloween volleyball tournament Friday and Saturday. The tournament featured NCAA Division II teams (University of Sioux Falls, Lindenwood and Minot State) and nationally-ranked NAIA team (Grand View).

The Trojans dropped their first match of the tournament to the host-team USF at the Stewart Center Friday afternoon. The Cougars won in five-set thriller by the scores of 21-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-22 and 15-12.

Kristen DiPaola had 21 kills for DSU. Lauren LaBar added 14 kills and two service aces. Stacey Schuller produced 44 set assists and recorded three service aces. She had 16 digs. Katie Green added three service aces. Mandi Atkins had 10 digs.

For USF, Emily Johnson had 21 kills and 10 digs. Samantha Lovell added 19 kills. Chanda Goedken recorded 14 kills. Charlee Nelson had 41 assists. Stephanie Moller added 19 assists. Tashayla Person contributed 17 digs.

The Cougars outhit the Trojans 68-54 in the match.

Dakota State made a quick trip to the Sioux Falls Christian high school gym Friday night for a match with Lindenwood (Mo.). The Trojans were swept in three straight sets (25-23, 25-21 and 25-22).

DiPaola had 12 kills for DSU. Stephanie Kruggel added 11 kills. Schuller had 22 assists and three service aces. Three players - Green, Kruggel and Schuller - had six digs.

Katie Weber had 10 kills for Lindenwood. Kelsey Biggs recorded 21 assists. Emma Brydels added 17 assists. Kaila Schrimpf led Lindenwood's defense with 16 digs.

Lindenwood had 41 kills compared to DSU 30 kills. Lindenwood recorded a killing efficiency of .233, while the Trojans had a .114 killing percentage.

On Saturday morning, Dakota State dropped a four-set match with former Dakota Athletic Conference foe Minot State at Sioux Falls Christian high school gym. The Trojans won the first set 25-19, but the Beavers won the next three sets (25-16, 25-20 and 25-18).

Kruggel had a double-double of 18 kills and 14 digs for DSU. DiPaola added 16 kills. Schuller recorded 39 assists and 11 digs.

Dakota State recorded 43 team kills in the match. The Trojans suffered 11 reception errors.

No statistics were available for Minot State.

DSU dropped the final match of the tournament to NAIA's No. 23 Grand View (Iowa). The Vikings won in three straight sets by the scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-17.

Kruggel and LaBar each had eight kills for the Trojans. Schuller had 20 assists and two service aces. Green led DSU's defense with 15 digs. Kruggel and DiPaola each had 11 digs.

For Grand View, Devon Jensen had 16 kills.  Erin Smith added 12 kills. Jessica Garland had 24 assists. Paige Smith added 19 assists.  Amber Boevers recorded 16 digs.

The Vikings outhit the Trojans 48-24 and .363-.141.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 16-19.

DSU will play their final regular season match on Saturday, Nov. 5 as they head to Rapid City, S.D. The Trojans face their former DAC foe South Dakota Mines. First serve is at 4 p.m. (CT)/3 p.m. (MT) at the King Center.
