Trojans struggle in loss to Jamestown in Dakota Tip-off Classic

JAMESTOWN, N.D. - The Dakota State University men's basketball team grabbed the biggest lead of the game in the early second-half Saturday evening at the Civic Center.  Jamestown (N.D.) rallied back late in the second-half to secure a 62-57 victory over the Trojans in the first day of the Dakota Tip-off Classic.

Dakota State dropped to 13-6 overall record and 1-1 in Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference record.  Jamestown raised their overall record to 9-12 and 1-2 record in the A.I.I.  The Jimmies are 6-2 at the Civic Center after the victory tonight.

DSU and JC went through two ties and seven lead changes in the first twenty minutes of the game.  The Jimmies had a 19-13 lead with 9:44 left in the first-half.

The Trojans had a 27-25 lead with 1:23 left before intermission.  Davon Thomas hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give the Jimmies a one-point lead at halftime (28-27).

Both teams struggled from the field in the first-half.  JC shot 39.3 percent (11-for-28), including 4-for-11 from the 3-point range (36.4 percent).  DSU was 31.3 percent from the field (10-for-32) and 3-for-10 from the 3-point arc (30 percent).

Dakota State outscored the Jimmies 12-2 in the first three minutes and 50 seconds of the second-half to earn a 39-30 lead.

With DSU leading at 49-43, JC outscored the Trojans 19-8 in the final 8:23 of the game.

JC edged DSU 34-30 in the second-half.

Tyrone Gordon, Jr. scored 12 points for Dakota State.  He was 4-for-9 from the field and 4-for-7 at the free-throw line.  Cameron Krump added nine points.  Yusuf Vinson and Luke Lamb each had eight points.  Keith Lee II had seven points and recorded two blocked shots.

Vinson had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Trojans.  Krump added nine rebounds.  John Lamb pulled down seven rebounds and recorded three steals.  Gordon, Jr. dished out five assists.

Thomas scored a game-high 21 points for the Jimmies.  He was 9-for-16 from the field, including 3-for-6 from the three-point line.  Mark Hoge added 14 points.  Breshion Tucker had 11 points.  Jared Sutherland scored 10 points off the bench.

Tucker grabbed six rebounds for Jamestown.  Hoge recorded four assists.

JC shot 40.4 percent overall from the field (23-for-57) compared to the Trojans' 35.1 percent (20-for-57).  The Jimmies made eight 3-pointers in 22 attempts (36.4 percent), while DSU was 6-for-19 from the 3-point range (31.6 percent).

DSU was 11-for-15 at the free-throw line (73.3 percent).  JC was 8-for-12 from the free-throw line (66.7 percent).

The Trojans outrebounded the Jimmies 43-33.

A total of three ties and nine lead changes were recorded in the game.

Dakota State plays Mayville State (N.D.) (lost to No. 20 Valley City State, N.D. 64-50 earlier in the day) in the consolation game of the Dakota Tip-off Classic on Sunday.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at the Civic Center in Jamestown, N.D.
