Warriors snap Trojan men's basketball four-game winning streak

FREMONT, Neb. - Midland (Neb.) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference earned a 31-20 halftime lead over Dakota State in men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Events Center.  The Warriors kept control for the rest of the game to earn a 63-53 victory over the Trojans.

Dakota State's four-game winning streak was snapped after the loss.  The Trojans, which received votes' recognition to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball national poll for eight straight weeks, dropped their overall record to 18-8.  Midland raised their overall record to 17-10.

The Trojans and Warriors went through two ties and three lead changes in the first four minutes and 56 seconds of the game. 

Leading 20-16 with 8:23 remaining in the first-half, Midland used an 11-1 run in a span of five-plus minutes to earn a 31-17 lead (3:06 left before halftime).

DSU trimmed MU's lead to eleven points by intermission.

The Trojans were held to 28 percent shooting in the first-half (7-for-25).  DSU was 4-for-8 from the 3-point line (50 percent).  Midland was 36.7 percent from the field (11-for-30) and 2-for-3 from the 3-point arc (22.2 percent).

Dakota State scored the first five points in the second-half to cut their deficit to 31-25 as Midland called timeout with 16:54 remaining.

From there, the Warriors maintained control for the rest of the game to earn a season series split with DSU. 

The Trojans could get no closer than five points at 36-31 with 15:08 left.

DSU outscored Midland 33-32 in the final twenty minutes of the game.

Yusuf Vinson recorded a double-double of 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Trojans.  John Lamb scored 14 points on his 5-for-10 shooting from the field, including 4-for-8 from the 3-point line.  Luke Lamb added nine points.  Terrell Newton had seven points.

Tyrone Gordon, Jr. earned six boards for Dakota State.  He dished out three assists and recorded three steals.  Newton had five rebounds.

James Parrott had a double-double of 22 points and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds for the Warriors.  He was 7-for-17 from the field and 7-for-11 from the free-throw line.  Ben Imig added 17 points.  Jalen Hueser scored 12 points off the bench.

Galen Gullie had six rebounds and three assists for MU.  Imig stole the ball four times in the game.

Midland shot 41.8 percent overall from the field (23-for-55) compared to DSU 32.1 percent (18-for-56).  The Trojans drained nine 3-pointers in 22 attempts (40.9 percent), while the Warriors were 3-for-18 from the 3-point arc (16.7 percent).

MU went to the free-throw line 22 times, converting 14 free-throws (63.6 percent).  DSU was 8-for-12 from the free-throw line (66.7 percent).

The Warriors outrebounded the Trojans 41-36.

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column next week as they continue their action on the road.  The Trojans head to Jamestown (N.D.) on Wednesday night.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Center in Jamestown, N.D.
