Trojans? comeback falls short in NSAA Football game versus Jimmies

MADISON, S.D. – Jamestown (N.D.) jumped to a 10-0 first quarter lead Saturday afternoon in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Football conference game over Dakota State (S.D.) at the Trojan Field.  The Jimmies held off Trojans' late comeback for a 37-29 victory.

Dakota State fell to 3-4 overall record and 1-3 in the North Star conference game.  Jamestown improved their overall record to 2-4 and 2-1 NSAA record.

UJ opened the game with three points on the scoreboard.  The Jimmies started their drive on their own 38-yard line and Beau Eriksson threw a pair of passes for two first-downs – a 23-yard pass to Michael Sena and 13-yard pass to Chris Johnson.  Grant Linde kicked a 37-yard field goal to give Jamestown a 3-0 lead with twelve minutes and seven seconds left in the first quarter.

The Trojans could not answer back on the ensuing drive.  The Trojans used 13 plays for 56 yards in 4:36, but Tanner Hubbard's 26-yard field goal was hit by the left goal post as UJ held on to a 3-0 lead with 7:33 left in first.

Jamestown added another score in the late first quarter, thanks to a 67-yard pass from Eriksson to Dezmund Pettigrew.  Linde's PAT kick was good to make it 10-0 UJ with 1:08 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Jimmies quickly regained possession from the kick-off as Cody Bretall recovered the ball on DSU's 25-yard line.  UJ could not convert their scoring chance as Linde missed a 36-yard field goal with 16 seconds left.

Dakota State broke their scoring drought in the second quarter.  The Trojans recorded 11 plays for 42 yards in 4:19 after Hubbard hit a 24-yard field goal with less than two minutes before intermission.

Jamestown held on to a 10-3 halftime lead.

After the Trojans went three-and-out to kick off the second half, UJ's Eriksson connected a six-yard touchdown pass with 12:01 left in the third quarter.  Linde's PAT kick was good as Jimmies' lead grew to 17-9.

DSU responded back on the next drive by using eight plays for 65 yards in 2:03, highlighted by Jacob Giles' 37-yard pass to Austin Opdahl.  Giles earned his first collegiate touchdown with a 1-yard touchdown run with less than ten minutes remaining in the third. The Trojans trimmed UJ's lead to 17-9.

Jamestown went on to score 10 straight points to extend their lead to 27-9 in the third quarter.  Eriksson rushed for a 10-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-one situation with 7:51 left (Linde's PAT kick was good) and Linde added a 24-yard field goal with 1:24 left.

After UJ's field goal, the Trojans answered with a touchdown when the third quarter expired.  Giles threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Opdahl to reduce their deficit to 27-15 by the end of the third quarter.

Linde recorded a 32-yard field goal to make it 30-15 in favor of the Jimmies.  UJ used seven plays for 21 yards in 4:17.

Giles recorded his second touchdown pass of the game with less than eight minutes remaining in the game.  He threw two straight passes to Zach Ely in the scoring drive, an 18-yard pass and a 39-yard pass for touchdown.  The PAT kick by Hubbard was good to cut UJ's lead to 30-22.  The Trojans used nine plays for 71 yards in 2:45 in the scoring drive.

Eriksson threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Sena with 1:53 remaining in the game.  Linde added a PAT kick as UJ expanded their lead to 37-22.

Ramel Dyer returned a kickoff for 55-yards to start DSU's drive on UJ's 14-yard line.  The Trojans quickly answered with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Giles to Brendon Waldner.  Hubbard hit a successful PAT kick to trim their deficit to 37-29 with 1:38 remaining in the game.

Jamestown successfully recovered DSU's onside kick on UJ's 49-yard line.  Facing 4th-and-8 situation on DSU's 49-yard line, the Trojans were whistled for a personal foul on UJ's kicker, resulting a first down for the Jimmies and secured the game for UJ.

Giles was 8-for-16 with 174 passing yards and earned three touchdown passes in his collegiate debut for the Trojans.  He added 10 rushes for 33 yards and a touchdown.  Justin Summers was 5-for-16 with 28 passing yards.  He had 64 rushing yards in 12 carries.

Jabree Shorter had eight rushes for 52 yard for DSU.  Jeremy Christner added 17 rushes for 49 yards.

Waldner recorded five receptions for 39 yards and a touchdown for Dakota State.  Opdahl added three catches for 93 yards and a touchdown.  Ely had three receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Eriksson was 21-for-32 with 370 passing yards and recorded three touchdown passes for the Jimmies.  He had 14 rushes for 44 yards with a touchdown. 

Eriksson threw at least a pass to nine different receivers in the game for Jamestown.  Sena had ten catches for 200 yards and a touchdown.  Pettigrew had a catch for 67 yards with a touchdown.  Farley had reception for a touchdown.

Linde was 3-for-4 on field goals for the Jimmies.  Hubbard was 1-for-2 field goals for the Trojans.

Ben Kullos led DSU's defense with 13 tackles.  Cole Potter, Trevor Kenobbie and Matt Groff each added six tackles.  Potter and Kenobbie each had a quarterback sack and two tackles-for-loss.

Jarelle Miller collected 12 tackles for the Jimmies.  Wes Worthen added 10 tackles.  Bo Silberg had two sacks.  Garrett Tenney recorded 1-and-1/2 sacks.

UJ outgained DSU 470-414 in total offensive yards.  The Trojans outrushed UJ 212-100, the seventh straight game with Dakota State had outrushed their opponent.  UJ had 370 passing yards compared to DSU's 202 passing yards.

DSU had 20 first-downs in the game, while UJ had 19 first-downs.

The Trojans were 5-for-19 on third-down conversions.  The Jimmies were 3-of-17 on third-downs. 

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they head to USD DakotaDome on Thursday evening.  The Trojans visit Briar Cliff (Iowa) in a non-conference football game in Vermillion, S.D.  Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
