Trojans drop exhibition game to NCAA Division II Augustana (S.D.) at Sioux Falls Arena

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.  – NCAA Division II Augustana (S.D.) dominated the boards, outrebounding Dakota State (S.D.) 59-26 in 95-51 victory at the Sioux Falls Arena.  It was an exhibition game for the Trojans.

Dakota State remains at 2-4 overall record.  Augustana, a member of the Northern Sun Intercollege Conference (NSIC), lifted their overall record to 4-0, including 2-0 record against the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) teams.

Miguel Sansavour hit a basket inside the paint with 15 seconds into the game to give the Trojans their first lead of the game. 

At 8-7, the Vikings exploded with a 13-0 scoring run to extend their lead into double digits at 21-7 with 14:26 remaining in the first-half.

A 3-pointer by Adam Hofer with 14:05 in the first ended the scoring drought as Trojans trim AC's lead to 21-10.

Dakota State reduced Augustana's lead into single digit after Brendon Boomsma drained a 3-pointer, forcing the Vikings to call timeout leading at 27-18 with less than 11 minutes before intermission.

Augustana closed the first-half with a 25-12 scoring run to gain a 52-30 halftime lead.

The Vikings shot 52.5 percent from the field (21-of-4) in the first twenty minutes of the game.  The Trojans were 11-of-29 from the field (37.9 percent) in the first-half.  AC outrebounded DSU 28-12.

Augustana outscored the Trojans 43-21 in the final twenty minutes of the game.

Sansavour scored 11 points for Dakota State.  He was 4-for-5 from the field and 3-for-5 from the free-throw line.  Hofer added 10 points from his 3-for-6 shooting, including 2-for-4 from the 3-point range and 2-for-4 at the free-throw line.  Bryant Allen scored seven points.  Boomsma and Derek Meger each had five points.

Boomsma dished out four assists for DSU.  Ian Barse and Meger each had two assists.

Nathaniel Rauen pulled down five rebounds for the Trojans.  Hofer added four rebounds.  Sansavour, Boomsma, Taylor Zirbel and Nick Boone each had three rebounds.

Sansavour recorded a game-high five blocked shots for DSU.

All five Vikings starters scored in double digits led by Daniel Jansen with 24 points (9-for-17 from the field and 4-for-8 from the 3-point line).  Casey Schilling had a double-double of 18 points and earned 15 rebounds.  Adam Beyer had 12 points.  Jordan Spencer scored 11 points.  Alex Richter had 10 points.

Jansen had six rebounds for AC. 

Beyer produced eight assists for Augustana.  Spencer, Schilling, Austin Saugstad and Zach Huisken each had three assists.

The Vikings shot 48.7 percent overall from the field (37-of-76) compared to the Trojans' 31.6 percent (18-of-57).  AC drained 10 3-pointers in 26 attempts (38.5 percent) while DSU was 5-of-24 from the 3-point line (20.8 percent). 

Dakota State went to the free-throw line 15 times and made 10 free-throws (66.7 percent).  Augustana was 11-for-14 from the free-throw line (78.6 percent).

The Vikings outscored the Trojans 50-22 inside the paint and 28-4 in second-chance points.

Dakota State returns back to regular-season action Saturday evening.  The Trojans head to Orange City, Iowa, for a match-up with Northwestern (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  Tip-off from the Bultman Center is set for 6 p.m. for both teams' second meeting this season (NWIA won the first meeting 84-81 on Nov. 11 in Madison, S.D.).
