La CROSSE, Wis. – Dakota State (S.D.) briefly took a five-point lead over Marian (Ind.) to kick off the first day of the NAIA Showcase (hosted by Viterbo, Wis.) Friday evening at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium. Marian went 11-for-19 (57.9 percent) from the 3-point line to earn a 73-56 victory over the Lady T's.
Dakota State fell to 1-2 overall record. The Knights lifted their overall record to 3-1.
The Lady T's earned the first lead of the game at 2-0 after BreeAna Olson hit a lay-up with eighteen minutes and twenty-six seconds left in the first-half.
Erin Rabenberg added a 3-pointer to extend DSU's lead to 5-0 with 18:05 remaining before halftime.
The Knights outscored the Lady T's 21-7 to grab a nine-point lead at 21-12 with 9:50 left in the first.
Marian grabbed a 39-23 halftime lead. MU shot 55.6 percent from the field in the first half (15-for-27), including a 6-for-10 shooting from the 3-point arc. The Lady T's were 9-for-30 from the field (30 percent) and 1-for-5 from the 3-point line.
The Knights maintained their double digits lead for the rest of the game. The Lady T's could get no closer than 13 points at 44-31 with 17:35 remaining in the game.
MU outscored DSU 34-33 in the final twenty minutes of the game.
Madison Walford scored 14 points for the Lady T's. Courtney Hulstein added eight points. Rabenberg had seven points. Sharee Galbraith and Jordan Hansen each scored six points.
Walford and Hulstein each grabbed six rebounds for DSU. Olson, Hansen and Galbraith each had six rebounds.
Hulstein, Olson, Rabenberg and Galbraith each dished out two assists for Dakota State.
Galbraith recorded two blocked shots for the Lady T's. Jayda Swenson and Summer Bailey each had two steals.
Lakan Hasser-Smith went 8-for-9 from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the 3-point range to score 20 points for Marian. Jenna Sullivan added 10 points. Jessica Almeida scored nine points.
Sullivan and Hasser-Smith each earned seven boards for the Knights.
Joana Soeiro dished out five assists for MU. Sullivan stole the ball three times and recorded three blocks.
Marian shot 47.5 percent overall from the field, converting 29 baskets in 61 attempts. Dakota State was 20-for-58 from the field (34.5 percent) and 3-for-12 from the 3-point arc (25 percent).
The Lady T's won the rebounding battle, outrebounding the Knights 38-36.
Dakota State plays the host-team Viterbo (Wis.), who lost to Indiana Northwest 67-56 in the night cap of the NAIA Showcase. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium in La Crosse, Wis.
