MADISON, S.D. – Trailing 37-33 in the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon at the Trojan Field, Presentation (S.D.) Antoine Scott ran for a 63-yard punt return for touchdown with one minute and ten seconds remaining to take a 40-37 lead over Dakota State (S.D.). DSU Tanner Hubbard's 44-yard field goal with three seconds left was short as the Saints held on to a three-point victory in a high-scoring affair North Star Athletic Association Football conference game.
Dakota State, who played their annual homecoming football game Saturday, fell to 2-2 overall record and 1-2 in NSAA conference play. Presentation won their second straight game to improve to 2-1 and earned their first NSAA victory.
Both teams were unable to score in the opening quarter.
Presentation scored its first points of the game in the second quarter that included a drive that started in the late first quarter. Stephen Braswell threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Matthew James and Gavin Voss' PAT kick was good to give Saints a 7-0 lead with 14:57 left in the second quarter.
The Saints used 13 plays for 73 yards in 4:07 for their first scoring drive of the game.
Dakota State committed a fumble on PC's 24-yard line with less than 13 minutes on the ensuing drive. The Saints were able to convert their scoring opportunity as Braswell connected to James for a 19-yard touchdown pass with 11:16 left before halftime. Voss' PAT kick was blocked by DSU's Spencer Carlson as PC held on to a 13-0 lead.
The Trojans scored on the next drive by using 10 plays for 60 yards in 3:44. Jeremy Christner rushed for a 1-yard touchdown run with 7:32 remaining in the second quarter. Hubbard's PAT kick was good as the Trojans cut PC's lead to 13-7.
DSU quickly scored to earn their first lead of the game after the Saints fumbled the ball during the kick-off return. PC's Jerome Mayfield fumbled the ball on PC's 22-yard line and was recovered by DSU's Dereck DeVries. DeVries returned the fumble recovery for a touchdown to tie the game at 13-13 with 7:22 remaining in the first half.
Hubbard added a successful PAT kick to put Trojans up 14-13.
The Trojans went on to add another score, thanks to PC's fumble on the punting team unit after a bad snap. A fourth-down-and-six situation on PC's 39-yard line, their bad snap was forced to be recovered by Voss as the DSU overtook their possession on PC 3-yard line with less six minutes left in the second quarter.
Hubbard would make a 36-yard field goal with 4:08 left in the second as the Trojans' lead grew to 17-13.
The Saints failed to convert their scoring chance by a yard short as the second quarter ended. On DSU's 32-yard line, Braswell threw a 31-yard pass to Anthony Bricker to DSU's 1-yard line as the first half was completed.
After Presentation earned a 13-0 lead, the Trojans went on to score 17 consecutive points for a 17-13 halftime lead.
The Saints went three-and-out to start the second-half and was forced to punt from PC's 38 yard line to DSU's 23-yard line (Brendon Waldner returned for three yards).
The Trojans used seven plays for 74 yards in 2:15 for the next scoring drive of the game, highlighted by a 41-yard run by Jabree Shorter. Shorter rushed for a 2-yard touchdown run with 11:26 remaining in the third quarter, extending Trojans' lead to 23-13 (Hubbard's PAT kick was no good).
PC used a 65-yard kick-off return by Scott to set up their drive on DSU's 25-yard line. The Saints were able to answer with a 2-yard touchdown run by Tone Gatewood with less than 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Voss added a PAT kick to cut PC's deficit to 23-20.
Dakota State recorded six plays for 60 yards in 2:49 to help the Trojans add another touchdown. Justin Summers threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Tisch on a third-and-16 situation on PC's 18 yard line. Hubbard's PAT kick was good to give the Trojans a 30-20 lead with 7:10 left in the third quarter.
The Saints scored on the ensuing drive to cut DSU's lead to 30-27 with 5:11 remaining in third. Braswell threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Eric Robinson. Voss kicked the PAT kick as the Saints trail 30-27.
The Trojans responded back with a touchdown 3:16 left on the clock in the third quarter. DSU used four plays with 10-plus yards in the scoring drive. Kamarri Watson rushed for a 14 yard from PC's 15-yard line but was fumbled and recovered by Zach Ely for a touchdown. Hubbard added the PAT kick to give DSU's a 37-27 lead.
Dakota State outscored Presentation 20-14 in the third quarter.
Hayden Zenner rushed for a 3-yard touchdown run to cap Saints' 12-plays for 71 yards in 4:18 for the score in the early fourth quarter. Voss' PAT kick was blocked (second time in the game) by Levar Colbert as the Trojans held on to a 37-33 lead with less than 14 minutes remaining in the game.
Presentation failed a scoring opportunity later in the fourth quarter after using 11 plays for 55 yards in 3:22. The Saints were unable to convert their fourth down situation on DSU's 18-yard line as the Trojans regained possession with 2:19 left in the game.
The Trojans went three-and-out in the next drive, forcing DSU to punt from their own 26 yard line. Scott returned a 63-yard punt for a touchdown as PC regained their lead at 39-37. Voss kicked a successful PAT kick to make it 40-37 in favor of the Saints with 1:10 remaining in the game.
Waldner was able a kick-off return for 45 yards to start their drive on DSU's 48-yard line. After the Trojans used six plays for 25 yards, Hubbard's 44-yard field goal attempt was short with three seconds remaining as the Saints sealed off the victory.
Presentation outscored Dakota State 13-0 in the final quarter.
Shorter rushed 17 times for 138 yards to lead Trojans' offense attack. Summers added 18 rushes for 84 yards. Christner recorded 15 rushes for 66 yards with two touchdowns.
Summers completed 13 passes in 19 attempts for 106 yards with a touchdown for DSU.
Waldner had four catches for 49 yards for Dakota State. Tisch had four receptions for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Braswell was 22-of-45 with 267 passing yards with three touchdowns for the Saints.
James caught the ball 13 times in the game for 181 yards and recorded two touchdowns for Presentation. Anthony Bricker added three catches for 57 yards. Robinson had a touchdown reception.
PC's Scott rushed 14 times for 93 yards. Zenner added 18 rushes for 89 yards and a touchdown. Gatewood ran the ball 12 times for 42 yards with a touchdown.
Ben Kullos led the Trojans' defense with 11 tackles. Ross and Jaysen Adams each added nine tackles. DeVries had a fumble recovery and returned for 22 yards, which resulted in a touchdown. Ross had an interception.
Mason Decker and Darion Office each had 0.5 quarterback sack for Dakota State.
Ross and Colbert each had a blocked PAT kick for DSU.
Four PC players earned double digits in tackles. Garret Fraser had a game-high 13 tackles. Wade Brandner and Ethan Bohle each had 12 tackles. Wyatt Sumption had 10 tackles. Hayden Hooks collected 1.5 quarterback sacks. Alex Karpstein had a quarterback sack.
Fraser had a fumble recovery for the Saints. Anthony Hendricks recorded an interception and returned for eight yards.
Presentation outgained Dakota State 454-428 in total yards. DSU had a season-high 322 rushing yards compared to the Saints' 187 rushing yards.
PC recorded 267 passing yards, while DSU had 106 passing yards.
The Saints converted 7-of-17 on third down conversions. The Trojans were 3-for-12 on third-downs.
DSU was whistled for 13 penalties for 195 yards in the game. PC was penalized seven times for 62 yards.
Dakota State heads on the road next Saturday (Sept. 27). The Trojans travel to Seward, Neb. for a non-conference game versus Concordia (Neb.). Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. at the Bulldog Stadium.
