MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University volleyball team continued their four-match home stand Tuesday evening, hosting College of Saint Mary (Neb.) in a non-conference match. The Flames swept the Trojans in three straight sets by the scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 26-24, ending DSU's five-match winning streak.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 12-6. College of Saint Mary lifted to 11-3 overall record.
The match started with four ties. Tied at 4-4, the Flames scored four straight points to grab an 8-4 lead and forced the Trojans to call timeout. CSM won the opening set 25-17 after hitting .314 (14 kills with 3 errors in 35 attempts). DSU hit .231 in the first set (13 kills with 4 errors in 39 attempts).
The Trojans opened the second set with a 6-3 lead, but the Flames answered back with three straight points to tie at 6-6. With DSU leading 12-11, CSM went on a 6-0 scoring spurt to overtake a 17-12 lead from the Trojans. Dakota State was able to make it no closer than three points at 21-18 as the Flames scored the final four points to win the second set (25-18) for a 2-0 match lead.
CSM hit .226 in the second set with 12 kills and committed 5 errors in 31 attempts. The Trojans were held to .061 hitting percentage (10 kills with 8 errors in 33 attempts).
The Flames scored the first two points of the third set, but Dakota State roared with a 7-0 scoring run for a 7-2 lead. Leading 12-9, CSM rallied back with a 4-0 run for a 13-12 lead. From there, both team tied the third set ten times.
Tied at 24-24, College of Saint Mary earned the final two points of the match for a 26-24 third set victory.
Dakota State hit .145 in the third set (16 kills with 8 errors in 55 attempts), while the Flames hit .138 (15 kills with 7 errors in 58 attempts).
Carly Rozell smashed 10 kills for the Trojans. She hit .320 in the match. Tessa Weeldreyer and Caitlin Pick each added eight kills. Hope Juntunen had five kills.
Stacey Westby produced 18 set assists for DSU. Kaylee Vander Wal added 11 assists.
Chelsey Davis led the Trojans' defense with 17 digs. Katherine Gonzalez added 13 digs. Westby had 12 digs to earn a double-double in the match.
Pick recorded 3.5 blocks in the match (a solo block and 5 block assists). Weeldreyer added 2.5 blocks (2 solo blocks and a block assist). Kylie Martin had two blocks (4 block assists).
Elaine Kramer had a match-high 12 kills for College of Saint Mary. Jessica Kuehner added nine kills. Jamie Carlson had eight kills.
Mackenzie Hyde registered 33 assists for the Flames.
Aysha Janssen earned 20 digs for CSM. Mallory Babic added 13 digs. Emmilie Kosiba recorded two solo blocks and three block assists (3.5 total blocks).
CSM outhit DSU 41-39. The Flames hit .210 in the match compared to the Trojans' .150 hitting efficiency. College of Saint Mary committed 15 attack errors in 124 attempts, while DSU had 20 attack errors in 127 attempts.
Dakota State struggled at the serving line, committing seven service errors in 60 attempts for a service percentage of .883. CSM was .947 at the serving line, recording six service aces and four errors. DSU had one service ace by Vander Wal.
The Trojans had nine blocks in the match compared to the Flames' five blocks.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they return back to North Star Athletic Association conference action this weekend. The Trojans host Dickinson State (N.D.) on Friday evening with a varsity match starting at 7 p.m. On Saturday, DSU will welcome the nationally-ranked Jamestown (N.D.), 24th in the latest NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Poll. There will be a junior varsity match at 1 p.m., followed by a varsity match at 3 p.m.
