MADISON, S.D. – Five different Dakota State men's basketball players scored in double digits Monday evening at DSU Fieldhouse, earning season-high in total points with 109-72 non-conference victory over Oglala Lakota (S.D.). Every Trojan had scored at least two points in the game.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 6-11, giving Gary Garner his 90th victory as the head coach at DSU.
The Trojans and Bravehearts battled through the first four minutes and 20 seconds with three ties and four lead changes.
Leading 12-11, the Trojans stormed OLC with a 29-8 scoring run to grab a 20-point lead at 39-19 with 9:15 left before intermission. DSU was 15-for-19 from the field during the first 10:45 of the game (79 percent shooting from the field).
Dakota State extended their lead to 62-33 by halftime. It was the most points scored in the first twenty minutes this season for the Trojans.
DSU shot a blazing 64.9 percent shooting from the field in the first-half, converting 24 baskets in 37 attempts. The Trojans were 8-for-14 from the 3-point arc (57.1 percent). OLC was 41.4 percent shooting in the first-half (12-of-29) and 4-for-13 from the 3-point line.
The Trojans earned their biggest lead of the game 82-37 with 15:26 remaining after Adam Hofer (SO/Huron, S.D.) drained a 3-pointer (assisted by Cameron Robinson (SR/Oxford, Ga.)).
Dakota State outscored Oglala Lakota 47-39 in the second-half.
Five Trojan players scored in double-digits in the game, including a pair of career-highs by Adam Fideler (SO/Volga, S.D.) and Taylor Zirbel (SO/Summit, S.D.).
Fideler scored 19 points off the bench for DSU. He was 6-for-12 from the field, including 5-for-10 from the 3-point line and converted both free-throws. Fideler was 4-for-4 from the field (all 3-pointers) in the first-half. Zirbel added 18 points on his 7-for-10 shooting from the field and 4-for-5 free-throws.
Bryant Allen (SR/Maplewood, Mo.) had 15 points for the Trojans. Brendon Boomsma (FR/Crooks, S.D.) scored 11 points. Derek Meger (JR/Duluth, Minn.) had 10 points.
Ian Barse (FR/Rapid City, S.D.) tallied nine points for Dakota State. Hofer had eight points. Nick Boone (FR/Edina, Minn.) scored seven points. Jay Huls (SO/Salem, S.D.) recorded six points.
Zirbel pulled down eight rebounds for DSU. Robinson added six rebounds. Barse and Boone each had five rebounds.
Robinson dished out a game-high eight assists for the Trojans. Boomsma added seven assists. DSU had a season-high 29 assists in the game.
Allen and Boon recorded a blocked shot in the game for Dakota State. Robinson and Fideler each had two steals.
Anthony Hopkins led the Bravehearts with 25 points. Brice Hornbeck added 24 points (11-for-21 shooting from the field).
Hornbeck earned six boards for OLC. Garrik Stands recorded five assists.
Dakota State shot a season-high 58.1 percent from the field, including a season-high 43 field goals in 74 attempts. The Trojans made a season-high 14 3-pointers in 30 attempts (46.7 percent).
Oglala Lakota was 28-of-66 from the field (42.4 percent) and 7-for-22 from the 3-point line.
DSU was 9-of-15 from the free-throw line (60 percent) compared to OLC 9-of-11 free-throws (81.8 percent).
The Trojans outrebounded the Bravehearts 42-28.
Dakota State plays their final non-conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans visit Trinity Bible (N.D.) before the North Star Athletic Association conference season kicks off on next Wednesday (Jan. 21). Tip-off from the Ray Ulmer Fieldhouse in Ellendale, N.D. is set for 3 p.m.
