Trojans conclude eight-match home stand with a 3-2 thriller over MMC

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) concluded their eight-match home stand at DSU Fieldhouse Tuesday evening with a 3-2 thriller over in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) as part of Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night.  The Trojans posted scores of 22-25, 25-13, 25-16, 17-25 and 15-12, finishing with a 6-2 record in the eight-match home stand.

The Trojans won their fourth straight match and 13th victory in the last 16 matches to raise their overall record to 17-12.  DSU had won 10 times in the last 13 home matches, dating back to last season (7-2 home record this season).  Mount Marty, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, fell to 7-17 overall record.

Leading 23-22 in the opening set, the Lancers sealed off with a pair of kills by Sierra Kloth for a 25-22 victory and 1-0 match lead.  MMC hit .364 in the first set (15 kills with 3 errors in 33 attempts) while DSU struggled with a .167 hitting percentage (14 kills with 7 errors in 42 attempts).

Tied 10-10, the Trojans stormed back with a 15-3 scoring run for a 25-13 second set victory and tied the match at 1-1.  DSU committed just 1 attack error in 31 attempts and smashed 14 kills with a hitting efficiency of .419.  The Lancers were limited to .108 hitting percentage (11 kills with 7 errors in 37 attempts).

Dakota State broke up the 11-11 tie in the third set by using a 14-5 scoring run, including scoring five straight points to close the set for a 25-16 victory and 2-1 match lead over MMC.  The Trojans hit .243 in the third set (14 kills with 5 errors in 37 attempts) while the Lancers were held to .000 hitting efficiency (9 kills with 9 errors in 38 attempts).

Mount Marty forced the fifth set, thanks to a strong 9-1 closing run for a 25-17 fourth set victory.  The Trojans were held to .000 hitting efficiency (9 kills with 9 errors in 58 attempts) compared to the Lancers' .209 hitting percentage (14 kills with 5 errors in 25 attempts).

The Trojans raced to a 4-0 lead in the fifth and deciding set.  The Trojans' lead grew to 8-3 before the Lancers rallied back with a 9-4 run to tie at 12-12.

Carly Rozell smashed two straight kills to put Trojans up at 14-12.  DSU sealed the match with a block by Tessa Weeldreyer and Kylie Martin from Kloth's attack.

A total of 30 ties and 10 lead changes were recorded in the match.  Dakota State is 5-1 record in five-set matches.

Rozell led the Trojans' offense attack with 20 kills.  Kirstin Johnson added 13 kills.  Alicia Karst tallied nine kills.  McKenzie Werner had eight kills. 

Kaylee Vander Wal posted a double-double of 27 set assists and 12 digs for Dakota State.  Rachel Johnson added 17 assists and 9 digs. 

Chelsey Davis collected 21 digs for DSU.  Allison Thielsen added 13 digs.  Thielsen and Rachel Johnson each had a service ace.

Weeldreyer registered seven blocks assists for the Trojans.  Kirstin Johnson had six block assists.  Werner recorded five block assists.

Kloth smashed 20 kills for the Lancers.  Bailey Kuchta added 12 kills.  Laura Cattle had 10 kills.

Amber Dythse produced a double-double of 47 assists and 26 assists for Mount Marty. 

BreAnne Thege had a match-high 30 digs for MMC.  Maura Lysne added 17 digs.  Rachel Reiff had six block assists.

Dakota State hit .175 in the match (59 kills with 25 errors in 194 attempts) compared to Mount Marty .159 hitting percentage (56 kills with 28 errors in 176 attempts). 

The Lancers recorded a service percentage of .967 (3 service errors in 92 attempts) while the Trojans was .942 from the service line with two service aces (6 errors in 103 attempts).

DSU recorded 14 blocks (26 block assists and a solo block) compared to MMC 7 blocks (14 block assists).

Mount Marty had 20 more digs than the Trojans (96-76).

Dakota State heads on the road Friday evening as they return back to the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference match.  The Trojans visit Presentation (S.D.) with a junior varsity match at 5 p.m. and varsity match at 7 p.m.  The matches will be held at the Strode Center in Aberdeen, S.D.
