Lady T's fall short for an upset bid, No. 11 UJ wins in overtime

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) had a six-point lead over the nationally-ranked and North Star Athletic Association's conference leader Jamestown (N.D.) with 2:14 to go in the game Wednesday evening in the Coaches versus Cancer 'White-Out' game at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Jimmies rallied back to tie the game and forced overtime, using a fast start in overtime and held on to defeat the Lady T's by the score of 85-82.

Dakota State lost their fourth straight game and dipped their overall record to 10-14 and 1-4 NSAA conference record.  Jamestown, ranked No. 11 in the latest NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, extended their winning streak to nine game with an overall record of 18-5 and 5-0 in NSAA record.

It was the second straight meeting – both at DSU Fieldhouse – which the game went into overtime.  UJ, ranked No. 3 in the last meeting, held on to a 90-82 victory after trailing as many as 12 points in the game.

The Jimmies quickly earned an 8-2 early lead in the ballgame with sixteen minutes and forty-eight seconds on the clock. 

Trailing 19-14, the Lady T's went on to score six straight points – four points by Sharee Galbraith and two points from Erin Rabenberg – to grab their first lead at 20-19 with 8:31 left before intermission.

Jamestown would regain their lead at 37-34 by halftime.

UJ was 53.8 percent shooting from the field in the first-half, converting 14 baskets in 26 attempts.  DSU was 13-of-31 from the field (41.9 percent). 

The Jimmies kicked off the second-half with an 8-3 scoring run to record the biggest lead of the game at 45-37 with 17:18 left.

At 50-43, the Lady T's staged a comeback with a 12-5 spurt to regain a 55-54 lead with 11:03 remaining in regulation. 

Knotted at 65-65, Dakota State opened up with a six-point lead at 4:11 remaining after Madison Walford hit a basket. 

Trailing 75-69, Jamestown went on to score five straight points to tie the game at 75-75 with less than 49 seconds left in the game.  UJ's Bryn Woodside nailed down both free-throws to knot the game.

The Lady T's committed a turnover with 32.2 seconds left in the game, turning the ball to Jamestown.  The Jimmies were unable to complete their possession due to a shot clock violation.

DSU was unable to get the final shot in regulation, forcing the game into overtime.  DSU was held to no points in the final 2:14 of the game.

Jamestown continued their scoring run to kick off in overtime by scoring six straight points to grab an 81-75 lead with 3:04 left.  The Jimmies were 2-for-2 from the field and made both free-throw attempts.

Dakota State ended their scoring drought with a field goal by Rabenberg with 2:01 left in overtime, trimming UJ's lead to 81-77.

Kadie Savage added two free-throws as UJ earned a six-point lead again at 83-77 with 1:43 left.

The Lady T's were able to cut Jimmies' lead to 85-82 with 32 seconds to go.

A foul committed by DSU sent Woodside to the free-throw for a double-bonus situation.  Woodside missed both free-throws and was rebounded by DSU's Kendra Lindblad.  DSU called their final timeout of the game with less than 18 seconds to go in the game.

A 3-pointer shot attempt by Rabenberg fell short as the time expiring, securing thrilling victory for the UJ.

Jamestown was 2-of-2 field goals and 5-of-8 free-throws in overtime compared to Dakota State 3-of-6 field goals and 1-of-4 free-throws.

A pair of Lady T players had 20-plus points in the game, led by Rabenberg with 21 points.  She was 8-of-15 from the field, 2-for-3 from the 3-point line and 3-of-4 free-throws.  Galbraith added 20 points (9-of-15 field goals and 2-of-4 free-throws).

BreeAna Olson added 15 points for DSU.  Walford and Lindblad each added seven points.  Jayda Swenson and Courtney Hulstein each scored six points.

Galbraith earned a game-high nine rebounds for Dakota State.  Walford tallied seven rebounds. 

Olson and Rabenberg each dished out three assists for the Lady T's.  Swenson, Hulstein, Lindblad and Jordan Hansen each had two assists. 

Olson stole the ball three times in the game for DSU.  Swenson and Galbraith each had two steals.

Jessica Buck led all scorers with 31 points for the Jimmies on her 11-of-12 field goal shooting.  She struggled from the free-throw line, going 9-of-20.  Megan Pold and Chelsey Frydenlund each had 13 points.  Woodside scored 11 points off the bench.

Pold earned eight boards for UJ.  Alexis Watts added six rebounds.

Frydenlund produced five assists for Jamestown.  Buck had four assists.

UJ's Kyra Dewald and Taylor Hammer each recorded two steals.

Jamestown shot 53.6 percent overall from the field (30-of-56) compared to Dakota State 46.3 percent (31-of-67).

The Jimmies went to the free-throw line 41 times, making 21 free-throws (51.2 percent).  The Lady T's were 17-of-27 free-throws (63 percent).

DSU outrebounded UJ 44-37 in the game. 

The Lady T's scored 28 points off from UJ's 18 turnovers in the game.  Jamestown had 12 points scored off from DSU's 17 turnovers.

Dakota State starts their second-half portion of the NSAA conference schedule Saturday afternoon, visiting Presentation (S.D.) at Strode Center in Aberdeen.  Jamestown will travel to Valley City, N.D. to take on their long-time rival Valley City State (N.D.) at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.  Both games are set to tip off at 4 p.m.
