MADISON, S.D. – Mount Marty (S.D.) scored in the first three innings in both games Monday afternoon at Riverside Park, cruising past Dakota State (S.D.) in non-conference doubleheader action. The Trojans could come up with a run as the Lancers posted 4-0 and 9-0 shutout victories.
Dakota State fell to 5-34 overall record. Mount Marty, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC), concluded their regular-season with an overall record of 13-26.
Game 1: Mount Marty (S.D.) 4, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL
Mount Marty grabbed the first lead of the game in the bottom first frame. Karlee Kozak drilled a triple with one out and scored on the same play caused by DSU's defensive error, giving MMC a 1-0 lead.
The Lancers added two runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 3-0. After the first two outs in the bottom half, Jessica Wirth and Jenn Mitera hit back-to-back singles. Kelsey Mitera produced a 2-RBI double to score Jessica Wirth and Jenn Mitera as MMC's lead grew by three runs.
Sophia Lopez recorded an RBI single to give Mount Marty a 4-0 lead in the bottom third inning.
Dakota State could not convert their scoring chances in the top fourth inning as they stranded a runner on second base.
The Lancers secured the victory as DSU left one runner on base in the final inning.
Harley Lindell was hit-by-pitch in the game for the Trojans.
Kozak was perfect at the plate with a triple, two singles and scored twice for Mount Marty. Kelsey Mitera added a double and 2 RBIs. Lopez recorded a single and an RBI. Lauren Orwig, Wirth and Jenn Mitera each had a hit.
MMC left four runners on base while DSU had three runners left on base.
Ellie Kristensen (5-19) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State. She allowed four runs on eight hits.
Amber Krause (5-13) tossed a complete game shutout victory for Mount Marty. She recorded eight strikeouts.
Game 2: Mount Marty (S.D.) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL/5 innings
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lancers opened up with a 4-0 lead in the first inning after the Trojans committed four defensive errors.
MMC added three runs in the bottom second frame. Kelsey Mitera led off with a double, followed by Krause's single (Kelsey Mitera advanced to third base). Kozak hit a 2-RBI triple to score Kelsey Mitera and Krause for MMC 4-0 lead. Olivia Rodriguez added an RBI single to score Kozark to extend Lancers' lead to 5-0.
Kozak added 2-RBI singles in the bottom third inning to make it 9-0 in favor of Mount Marty.
Dakota State left three runners on base when the game ended in the top fifth inning, sealing the victory for the Lancers.
Erica Belter, Sara Erickson, Elizabeth Rubalcava and Shai-Lee Hill each had a single for the Trojans. Lynnie Angle and Kristensen reached on base by a walk.
Kozak had a triple, single and collected four RBIs for the Lancers. Krause added two singles. Rodriguez, Cassidy Janicek, Lopez, Marissa Cantrell, Jean Zakrzewski, Jenn Mietera, Kelsey Mitera and Grace Eshelman each had a hit. Rodriguez and Lopez each had an RBI.
MMC outhit DSU 12-4 in the game.
The Lancers left eight runners on base while the Trojans had seven runners on base.
Shai-Lee Hill (0-13) worked for four innings in loss for DSU. She allowed nine runs (four unearned) on 12 hits.
Katie Groteluschen (3-4) recorded the victory for MMC. She tossed four innings and gave up two hits. She issued one walk. Brooke Becker pitched the fifth inning and allowed two hits.
Dakota State concludes their regular-season schedule Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader at South Dakota State. The doubleheader kicks off at 3 p.m. at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium in Brookings, S.D.
