MADISON, S.D. – BreeAna Olson hit her 1,000-career points Thursday evening as Dakota State (S.D.) dropped an 83-43 home opener over Northwestern (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) at DSU Fieldhouse. The Red Raiders – receiving votes in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll – shot 48.5 percent overall from the field while holding the Lady T's to 19.7 percent shooting.
NWIA opened up the first quarter with a 17-5 lead after shooting 7-of-15 from the field (46.7 percent). DSU was held to 13.3 percent shooting (2-of-15 from the field goal).
The Red Raiders extended their lead to 32-12 by halftime and never looked back. Northwestern outscored Dakota State 51-31 in the last twenty minutes of the game.
Olson hit the 1,000-point milestone with a basket with 2:34 remaining in the game as the Lady T's trailed 79-41.
She finished the game with seven points and pulled down six rebounds for Dakota State. Shemika Frazier added nine points. Jamie Tebben went 6-of-6 from the free-throw line for six points. Lindsey Vogl had five points.
Britley Plautz and Olson each recorded four steals in the game for the Lady T's. Plautz and Kelley Criddle each had four blocked shots. Cassie Jones dished out two assists.
Kassidy De Jong led the Red Raiders with 26 points on her 11-of-22 field goal shooting and 4-of-5 free-throws. Haley Birks added 16 points and five blocked shots. Paige Danner had 14 points. Renee Maneman produced nine assists and stole the ball four times.
Northwestern shot 32-of-66 from the field compared to Dakota State 12-of-61. The Red Raiders were 6-of-15 from the 3-point line, while the Lady T's were 1-of-12 3-pointers.
DSU converted 18 free-throws in 23 attempts (78.3 percent). NWIA was 13-of-17 free-throws (76.5 percent).
The Red Raiders outrebounded the Lady T's 52-35. Northwestern dished out 20 assists while Dakota State recorded four assists.
Dakota State stole the ball 17 times in the game compared to Northwestern 13 steals. Both teams had 11 blocked shots in the game.
DSU stays home at DSU Fieldhouse as they face another opponent from the GPAC on Tuesday evening. The Lady T's host Dordt (Iowa) with a tip-off starting at 5:30 p.m.
