Chargers start fast, defeat Trojans in battle of NAIA's Top 25 teams

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – No. 14-ranked Dakota State (S.D.) faced the NAIA's Top 25 nationally-ranked team for the third time this month Saturday morning at Newman Flaagan Center, visiting No. 4-ranked Briar Cliff (Iowa).  The Chargers scored the first 11 points of the game and never looked back as they defeated the Trojans 94-74.

Dakota State fell to 3-4 overall record.  Briar Cliff, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division II National Tournament last season, is 4-2 overall record.

The Chargers cruised to an 11-0 lead in the first three minutes and twenty-four seconds of the game, forcing the Trojans to call time out.

Trailing 14-2, the Trojans went on to score seven points to cut BCU's lead to 14-9 with 14:34 left in the first-half.

Briar Cliff earned the biggest lead of the first-half, holding a 44-28 halftime advantage over Dakota State.  BCU was 13-of-28 from the field (13-of-28) and made 14-of-17 free-throws in the first-half compared to DSU 12-of-30 field goal shooting (40 percent) and 0-of-2 from the free-throw line.

The Chargers maintained their double-digit lead for the rest of the game, outscoring the Trojans 50-46 in the final 20 minutes of the game.

Ian Barse and Bobby Farquah each scored 19 points for DSU.  Barse was 8-of-13 from the field and 3-of-6 from the 3-point arch.  Farquah was 9-of-14 from the field.  Brendon Boomsma added seven points.  Tanner Heiser and Falcon Albers each added six points.

Heiser led the Trojans with four assists and pulled down seven rebounds.  Barse had five rebounds.  Nathaniel Rauen stole the ball three times.

Bryan Forbes posted a double-double of 22 points and earned 13 rebounds for the Chargers.  Erich Erdman added 15 points.  Shane Graves and Jordan Eisma each scored 12 points.  Blake Wiltgen had 10 points off the bench. 

Graves dished out four assists for BCU.  Jordan Comstock had seven rebounds.

Briar Cliff shot 50.8 percent overall from the field, converting 32-of-63 field goals.  Dakota State was 28-of-66 from the field (42.4 percent).  The Chargers drained 12 3-pointers in 29 attempts while the Trojans were 7-of-28 (25 percent).

BCU was 18-of-23 free-throws (78.3 percent).  DSU made 11-of-13 from the free-throw line (84.6 percent).

The Chargers outrebounded the Trojans 43-29.  The Trojans outscored Chargers 9-5 in second-chance pionts and 40-28 in bench points.

Dakota State stays on the road as they play a pair of games in the Draemel Classic next weekend.  The Trojans play Morningside (Iowa) on the first day of the classic on Nov. 26 at 2 p.m., followed by a match-up versus No. 21-ranked Midland (Neb.) on Nov. 27 at 3 p.m.  All games are set at Events Center in Fremont, Neb.
