Jimmies end Trojan Volleyball?s season in NSAA quarterfinals

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – No. 23-ranked Jamestown (N.D.) hit .344 in the North Star Athletic Association Volleyball quarterfinal match versus Dakota State (S.D.) Tuesday evening at the Hansen Center, earning a 3-0 sweep over the Trojans.  The Jimmies posted scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-20 to move on to Friday's semifinal match versus No. 2 seed Bellevue (Neb.) in La Crosse, Wis.

Dakota State, No. 6 seed in the conference postseason tournament, wrapped up their 2016 season with an overall record of 12-21.  The Trojans recorded its third straight season with double-digits victories.  Jamestown, No. 3 in the conference tournament, won their fifth straight match to raise their overall record to 24-11.

Jamestown opened up the match with an 8-3 lead and never looked back.  The Jimmies extended their lead to 20-10.  The Trojans could get no closer than eight points as UJ secured the first set at 25-16.  Jamestown outhit Dakota State 16-10 in the first set. 

Tied at 7-7 in the second set, UJ scored nine straight points to gain a 16-7 lead.  The Trojans could get no closer than six points at 22-16 as the Jimmies extended their match lead to 2-0 after a 25-17 victory.

UJ smashed 16 kills in the second set compared to DSU 6 kills.  The Jimmies registered a hitting percentage of .294 compared to the Trojans' .037 hitting efficiency.

Dakota State grabbed a 9-4 lead in the third set.  With DSU leading 11-6, the Jimmies used a 17-4 scoring spurt to regain their lead at 21-15.  Jamestown secured the third set 25-20, earning a 3-0 match sweep over the Trojans. 

UJ hit .355 in the third set (15 kills with 4 errors in 31 attempts) compared to DSU .233 hitting percentage (12 kills with 5 errors in 30 attempts).

Clarissa Blick smashed nine kills for DSU.  She hit .444 in the match.  Tessa Weeldreyer added eight kills.  Carly Rozell had seven kills. 

Kaylee Vander Wal produced 14 set assists for the Trojans.  McKenna DeMoe added 12 assists.

Chelsey Davis collected 12 digs for DSU.  Rozell and Weeldreyer each had a service ace.  Rozell registered two solo blocks.

Heather Bachman recorded 10 kills for the Jimmies.  Kaitlin Anderson added nine kills.  Siri Jystad had eight kills.  Bachman and Jystad each hit .471 in the match.

Aubrey Beaumont had 21 set assists for UJ.  Josie Hegerle earned 19 assists.

Nicole Warren led Jamestown's defense with 14 kills.  Whitney King recorded five service aces, while Kori Buchanan had three aces. 

Madison Wendel, Anderson and Jessica Velander each had a solo block and a block assist for UJ.

Jamestown tallied 47 kills in the match, committing 15 errors in 93 attempts.  Dakota State hit .179 with 28 kills and 13 errors in 84 attempts.

UJ recorded 10 service aces with a service percentage of .932 (5 service errors).  DSU was .943 from the serving line, recording two service aces and three service errors.  The Jimmies had five team blocks compared to the Trojans' three team blocks.

It was the final career collegiate volleyball match for eight Trojan seniors – Davis, Kirstin Johnson, Kylie Martin, Mackenzie Schultz, Annika Stephens, Taylor Stratton, Vander Wal and Weeldreyer.
