MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) returned back home for the first time since Nov. 1, hosting Waldorf (Iowa) in the North Star Athletic Association Women's Basketball conference action Friday evening at DSU Fieldhouse. The Lady T's poured in a season-high 86 points, pulling away for an 86-77 victory over the Warriors.
Dakota State halted their five-game losing streak, improving their overall record to 2-10 and 1-4 record in North Star play. Waldorf fell to 2-12 overall record and 0-3 NSAA conference record.
The Warriors missed their first six shots of the game to allow the Lady T's to grab a 7-0 lead with seven minutes and thirty-seven seconds on the clock in the first period.
DSU expanded their lead to 25-13 after the end of the first quarter, shooting 42.9 percent from the field (9-of-21). WU was held to 25 percent field goal shooting in the opening quarter, making 4 field goals in 16 attempts.
Dakota State opened up the second quarter with an 8-3 scoring run, stretching to their biggest lead of the game at 33-16 after a pair of free-throws by Kelsey Poppen with 5:36 left. The Warriors then answered back by scoring 10 straight points to cut DSU's lead to 33-26 with less than three minutes to go before intermission.
The Lady T's would score seven straight points to regain their double-digit lead back at 40-26 with 1:52 left.
Shelby Vogel made a lay-up right before the halftime buzzer, giving Dakota State a 45-36 halftime lead.
DSU was 43.2 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes (16-of-37) compared to WU 38.2 percent (13-of-34).
Waldorf rallied back in the third period after using a 16-6 outburst to grab their first lead of the game at 52-51 (after Peyton Russell's field goal) with 4:31 on the clock.
The Warriors' lead was brief-lived, holding a three-point lead at 54-51 before DSU BreeAna Olson's 3-pointer tied the game at 54-54.
The Lady T's overtook a 61-58 lead by the end of the third quarter, thanks to another quarter buzzer field goal by Vogel (assisted by Jamie Tebben).
WU was 8-of-13 from the field in the third quarter, while DSU was 7-of-19 field goals. The Warriors outscored the Lady T's 45-36 in second and third quarters combined.
Waldorf could get no closer than three points at 69-66 after a 3-pointer by Taylor Fricke with 7:09 remaining. Dakota State would score six straight points from Poppen to extend their lead to 76-68 with 5:14 left.
Kennedy Wagner nailed down a pair of free-throws as the Lady T's secured the game after earning a double-digit lead at 84-74 with less than 22 seconds to play.
DSU outscored WU 25-19 in the final quarter.
Poppen scored a season-high 23 points for the Lady T's. She was 10-of-14 from the field and made all three free-throw attempts. Olson added 19 points. Wagner tallied 17 points. Tebben and Vogel each scored six points off the bench. Jordan Hansen had five points.
Britley Plautz grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for Dakota State. Tebben earned six boards. Poppen had five rebounds.
Wagner dished out six assists for DSU. Hansen had five assists. Olson recorded four assists and stole the ball five times. Plautz registered two blocked shots.
Fricke led the Warriors with 21 points after going 8-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-6 from the 3-point arc. Samantha Birkes added 15 points. Ameh Ogbemudia scored 12 points. Angie Gore and Morgan Straight each had nine points.
Fricke pulled down eight rebounds for Waldorf. Gore had seven rebounds. Straight contributed five assists. Nichole Oberthien had four assists and three steals.
Both teams shot 44 percent overall from the field, with Dakota State making 31 baskets in 70 attempts while Waldorf hit 28 field goals in 63 attempts. WU was 12-of-22 from the 3-point line compared to DSU 8-of-21 3-pointers.
DSU was perfect from the free-throw line, making all 16 free-throws. WU was 9-of-14 free-throws (64.3 percent).
The Lady T's set season-highs in field goal percentage (44.3 percent), free-throw percentage (100.0 percent) and 23 assists.
DSU outrebounded WU 40-37. The Lady T's outscored the Warriors 40-30 inside the paint.
Dakota State remains home as they play another North Star contest Saturday afternoon at DSU Fieldhouse. The Lady T's host Viterbo (Wis.) with a tip-off starting at 3 p.m.
Waldorf heads south as they visit Bellevue (Neb.) Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
