SIOUX CITY, Iowa – On a windy Bishop Mueller Field Thursday afternoon, Briar Cliff (Iowa) swept Dakota State (S.D.) in a non-conference doubleheader. The Trojans earned the first lead of the game in the first game, but the Chargers outscored DSU 9-0 in the last three-and-half innings for 9-1 victory. BCU used another 9-0 run after DSU held a 2-1 lead in the second game of the doubleheader, recording a 10-2 victory.
Dakota State fell to 2-11 overall record. Briar Cliff improved their overall record to 12-16.
Game 1 – Briar Cliff (Iowa) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL
The Trojans grabbed the first lead of the game in the opening inning. Kylee Pospisil drilled a double and advanced to third after Elizabeth Rubalacava's single with one out. Audrey Kosman recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Pospisil for DSU's 1-0 lead.
BCU scored twice in the bottom second frame to overtake the lead from the Trojans 2-1.
The Chargers extended their lead to 8-1 in the bottom third inning with six runs scored, highlighted by Jessica Bastian's grand slam.
Amy Anderson and Bastian each added an RBI single as Briar Cliff added two runs for a 10-1 lead in the bottom fourth.
Dakota State left one runner on base in the fifth inning, securing the victory for BCU.
Pospisil went 1-of-2 at the plate with a double and a run scored for the Trojans. Rubalcava added a single. Kosman registered an RBI. Tatum Ronke reached on base by a walk.
Bastian was 2-of-3 with a home run, single and collected five RBIs for the Chargers. Anderson added two hits and two singles. Katilin Briley recorded two singles. Madison Deane, Bailee Meyer, Danielle Ishii and Romero each had a hit.
BCU outhit DSU 10-2 in the game.
Kosman (L, 1-6) took the loss in the circle for Dakota State. She tossed three innings and gave up seven runs (one unearned) on seven hits. Claire Fischer worked for one inning in relief and allowed two runs on three hits.
Bastian (W, 2-4) pitched a complete game victory for Briar Cliff. She limited the Trojans to one run on two hits.
Game 2 – Briar Cliff (Iowa) 10, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL
Briar Cliff jumped to a 1-0 lead in the opening inning of the second game of the doubleheader after Anderson's RBI single.
A pair of DSU's batters blasted a solo home run in the top third inning. Harley Lindell hit her first home run of the season – her fourth career home run at DSU – as the Trojans knotted the game at 1-1 with one out.
Pospisil hit her first career home run as Dakota State gained a 2-1 lead with two outs in the top third.
The Chargers answered back in the bottom fourth after exploding for six runs. Bastian led off the Chargers with a home run. Deane added a 3-run home run in the inning to give BCU a 7-2 lead.
After the first outs of the bottom fifth inning were recorded, Briar Cliff hit four consecutive hits and produced three runs to finish the game for a 10-2 victory. Anderson hit an RBI single as the game ended.
Pospisil was 1-of-3 at the plate with a home run and an RBI for the Trojans. Lindell added a home run and an RBI. April Pisk added a single. Ariana Duran was reached safely by a walk. Erica Belter swiped one base.
Anderson went 3-of-4 with three singles and three RBIs for the Chargers. Briley added a double, two singles and two RBIs. Deane had a home run, single and three RBIs. Bastian added a home run and an RBI.
BCU tallied 13 hits in the game compared to DSU 3 hits.
Ashley Olson (L, 0-3) recorded the loss on the mound for the Trojans. She worked for 3 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits. Shai-Lee Hill threw one inning in relief and gave up three runs on four hits.
Ciara Dotzler (W. 9-7) earned a complete game win for the Chargers. She yielded two runs on three hits.
Dakota State looks to halt their losing skid this weekend as they resume their North Star Athletic Association conference action. The Trojans host Viterbo (Wis.) in a four-game series, starting on Saturday with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Both teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday at 12 p.m. All games will be held at the Thue Softball Complex in Madison, S.D.
