Lancers use second-half surge to defeat Lady T's 63-55

YANKTON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) held a 23-21 halftime advantage Sunday afternoon at Cimpl Arena, but Mount Marty (S.D.) outscored the Lady T's 42-32 in the second-half to earn a 63-55 non-conference women's basketball victory.  It was also the final non-conference regular-season game for the Lady T's.

Dakota State fell to 6-17 overall record.  Mount Marty, a member of the Great Plains Athletic conference, improved to 11-13 overall record.

The Lady T's and Lancers went through 4 ties and 2 lead changes in the opening quarter.  MMC led 11-10 after the first period.

Trailing at 20-14 in the second quarter, DSU used a 9-0 outburst in a span of four-plus minutes to regain their lead at 23-20 after a basket by Jamie Tebben with 1:36 left before halftime. 

Mount Marty trimmed Dakota State's lead down to two points at 23-21 by halftime. 

Dakota State stretched their lead to 28-21 after opening the third quarter with a 5-0 run, thanks to a field goal by Britley Plautz and a 3-pointer from Kelsey Poppen.

The Lancers answered back with a 17-6 run to close the third quarter with a 39-35 lead.  MMC outscored DSU 18-11 in the first ten minutes of the second-half.

Mount Marty continued their scoring run to start the fourth quarter, scoring eight straight points to extend their lead to 47-34 with 7:47 left.

Dakota State could get no closer than six points on two different occasions – 54-48 after a 3-pointer by Tebben with 2:57 to go and 61-55 after a 3-pionter by Lindsey Vogl with less than 50 seconds to go.

Tebben scored a season-high 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds off the bench for the Lady T's.  She was 6-of-11 from the field.  BreeAna Olson added 10 points.  Shelby Vogel had seven points.

Kelley Criddle recorded five rebounds for DSU.  Vogel had four rebounds.  Plautz had a blocked shot.  Kennedy Wagner stole the ball twice.  Vogel, Cassie Jones and Vogl each dished out three assists.

Four players scored in double-digits for the Lancers, led by Sammy Kasowski with a double-double.  She had 18 points and earned 14 rebounds.  Kellie Winckler added 11 points.  Logan Wagner and Denae Veldkamp each registered 10 points.

Winckler had eight rebounds and three steals for MMC.  Wagner produced three assists. 

Both teams struggled from the field, shooting below 40 percent in the game.  MMC shot 34.5 overall from the field (19-of-55) compared to DSU 32.3 percent (20-of-62).  Both teams made five 3-pointers.

The Lancers went to the free-throw line 30 times, making 20 free-throws (66.7 percent).  The Lady T's were 10-of-14 free-throws (71.4 percent).

MMC outrebounded DSU 43-39.  The Lady T's outscored the Lancers 27-5 in bench points.

Dakota State returns back to North Star Athletic Association conference play next weekend.  The Lady T's stay on the road Friday as they visit Waldorf (Iowa).  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Hanson Fieldhouse in Forest City, Iowa.
