Lady T's fall in overtime to Comets in North Star conference game

MAYVILLE, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) opened up the overtime period with a 62-59 lead Friday evening over Mayville State (N.D.) in the North Star Athletic Association Women's Basketball conference action at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.  The Comets shut down the Lady T's 10-0 in the final 2:19 of the game for a 69-62 victory.

Dakota State's overall record stands at 3-14 and 2-5 NSAA record after the loss.  Mayville State won their third straight game to raise their overall record to 7-6 and 2-3 North Star conference record.

The Comets opened up the game with an 11-4 lead with three minutes and thirty-six seconds left in the first quarter.  The Lady T's answered back with a 6-2 run to cut MSU's lead to 13-10 by the end of the first period.

DSU extended their scorning run up to 9-2 to tie the game at 13-13 with 9:10 on the clock in the second quarter. 

A 3-pointer by BreeAna Olson gave Dakota State their first lead of the game at 22-21, forcing Mayville State to call a timeout with 2:58 remaining before intermission.

Coming out of the timeout, MSU stormed to the biggest lead of the game with a 10-1 scoring run to regain their lead at 31-23 with less than a minute to go in the second period.

Lindsey Vogl hit two consecutive 3-pointers as the Lady T's reduced their deficit to 31-29 by halftime.

MSU shot 10-of-27 from the field (37 percent) in the first twenty minutes of the game.  DSU was 10-of-29 field goals (34.5 percent) in the first-half.

Dakota State kicked off the third quarter with an 11-2 scoring outburst to grab a 40-33 lead after a pair of free-throws by Jamie Tebben with 4:25 on the clock.  The Comets would close the third period with a 10-3 run to knot the game for the third time at 42-42.

The Lady T's and Comets when through six lead changes in the final quarter.  With DSU leading 59-56, Sydney Gangl hit a 3-pointer as MSU knotted the game at 59-59 with less than 45 seconds to go in the game.

Dakota State was unable to convert their scoring chances in the final possession of the game, extending the game into overtime.  Both teams scored 17 points in the fourth quarter.

The Lady T's opened up the extra period with a 60-59 lead with a free-throw by Britley Plautz with 3:44 left.  Olson added a field goal to extended DSU's lead to 62-59 with 2:54 remaining.

Mayville State broke their scoring drought with a field goal by Naomi Torgerson with 2:19 left as the Lady T's hang on to a 62-61.

The Comets closed the game with a 10-0 run as Torgerson went 4-of-4 from the free-throw line to secure the game.

A total of 12 lead changes and 4 ties occurred in the game.

Plautz posted a double-double of 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Lady T's.  Olson added 18 points and collected eight rebounds.  Vogl scored 14 points off the bench on her 5-of-9 field goals, including 4-of-7 from the 3-point line.  Tebben had six points and grabbed nine rebounds.  Kennedy Wagner had six rebounds.

Cassie Jones produced three assists for DSU.  Olson stole the ball four times.  Plautz had two blocked shots.

Torgensen scored 22 points (8-of-8 free-throws) and earned eight rebounds for the Comets.  Claire Blascziek and Andi Gayner each added 12 points.  Gayner and Andrea Skillingstad each had five rebounds.

Torgensen contributed five assists for MSU.  Blascziek recorded six steals.  Cyan Hale had four steals.

Mayville State shot 35 percent overall from the field (21-of-60) compared to Dakota State 33.3 percent (21-of-63).  The Lady T's were 8-of-20 from the 3-point arc (40 percent) while the Comets made 5-of-24 3-pointers (20.8 percent).

MSU went to the free-throw line 28 times, making 22 free-throws in the game (78.6 percent).  DSU was 12-of-18 free-throws (66.7 percent).

The Lady T's outrebounded the Comets 43-36.

Dakota State stays on the road as they travel to Omaha, Neb. next Friday (Jan. 13) as they visit Grace (Neb.).  The non-conference slate is set for 5 p.m. at Jim Classen Gymnasium.
