Jimmies roll past Trojans in North Star volleyball action

MADISON, S.D. – No. 19-ranked Jamestown (N.D.) recorded a hitting percentage of .279 Saturday afternoon, rolling past Dakota State (S.D.) in the annual Dig Pink volleyball match at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Jimmies swept the Trojans in three straight sets by the scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-19 in the North Star conference action.

Dakota State, who is currently on a five-match home stand at DSU Fieldhouse, fell to 10-21 overall record and 4-9 NSAA conference record.  Jamestown lifted their overall record to 18-7 and 11-2 North Star conference record.

FIRST SET

Holding a 14-11 lead, Jamestown went on a 5-1 run to earn the largest lead of the first set at 19-12.  The Trojans could get no closer than five points at 20-15 and 23-18 as UJ took a 1-0 match lead after a 25-18 victory.

The Jimmies smashed 15 kills and only committed 2 attack errors in 31 attempts for an impressive .419 hitting percentage in the opening set.  Dakota State had 13 kills with 4 errors in 33 attempts (.273 hitting percentage).

SECOND SET

Jamestown dominated the second set after outhitting Dakota State 13-7, extending their match lead to 2-0.  Leading 15-9, the Jimmies scored eight straight points to widen their lead to 23-9 and never looked back for a 25-12 win.

The Jimmies hit .379 in the second set (13 kills with 2 errors in 29 attempts) while holding the Trojans to minus .083 hitting efficiency (7 kills with 10 errors in 36 attempts).

THIRD SET

UJ went on a 5-0 scoring run for a 6-2 lead after the Trojans had a 2-1 lead.  Jamestown maintained their lead for the rest of the third set, securing the match with a 25-19 victory. 

Dakota State recorded 9 kills with 8 errors in 43 attempts (.023 hitting percentage).  The Jimmies registered a hitting efficiency of .114 (12 kills with 7 errors in 44 swings).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Carly Rozell pounded a match-high 12 kills for the Trojans, her eighth straight match with double-digit kills.  Maddie Polzin added six kills.  Kaylee Spreier had five kills.  Rachel Johnson contributed 16 set assists.

Johnson, Bailee Steffensen and Rozell each collected nine digs for DSU.  Polzin added six digs.  Rozell recorded two service aces.  Spreier had two block assists.

Isabel Wedell led the Jimmies with eight kills and recorded a hitting percentage of .353.  Morgan Hensch and Madison Wendel (.636 hitting efficiency) each added seven kills.  Josie Beckman produced 17 assists, while Whitney King had 16 assists.

Elise Peterson recorded 15 digs and 2 service aces for Jamestown.  King added two aces.  Julina Niemeier had 13 digs.  Wendel registered three block assists.  Haley Glasoe, Hensch and Birtta Knudson each had two block assists.

Jamestown outhit Dakota State 40-29 in the match.  The Jimmies committed 11 attack errors in 104 attempts compared to the Trojans' 22 attack errors in 112 attempts (.063 hitting percentage).

DSU was better at the serving line, recording a 96.1 percentage rate with three aces and 2 errors in 51 serves.  UJ was 95.9 percent service rate with five aces and three errors in 73 attempts.

The Jimmies had five blocks compared to the Trojans four blocks.  UJ had 54 digs while DSU had 50 digs.

UP NEXT

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column Wednesday evening, continuing their five-match North Star conference home stand.  The Trojans host Presentation (S.D.) with a junior varsity match at 5 p.m., followed by a varsity match at 7 p.m.  Both matches will be held at DSU Fieldhouse.  The DSU Volleyball program will be holding their Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night.

Jamestown returns home for their three-match home stand, starting on Tuesday evening versus Dickinson State (N.D.).  First serve is set for 6 p.m. at Newman Arena in Jamestown, N.D.
