FREMONT, Neb. – Midland (Neb.) outscored Dakota State (S.D.) 28-20 in the final quarter Saturday afternoon, pulling away for an 85-74 women's basketball non-conference victory at Events Center.
Dakota State fell to 3-4 overall record, while Midland improved to 4-3.
Lindsey Vogl opened up with a lay-up to give the Lady T's their first lead of the game at 2-0 with nine minutes and fourteen seconds on the clock in the first quarter.
At 9-9, the Warriors went on a 13-6 run to earn a 22-15 lead with less than 30 seconds to go in the first period. Vogl drained a 3-pointer just few ticks before the end of the first quarter as DSU trimmed MU's lead to 22-18.
Holding a slim 2-point lead at 28-26, Midland scored seven straight points to widen their lead to 35-26 with 2:38 remaining in the second period. Dakota State shut down the Warriors for the rest of the second quarter, cutting their deficit to 35-30 by halftime (field goals by Alexis Evans and Raven Patton).
The Warriors kicked off the third quarter with an 8-4 run to earn the first double-digit lead of the game at 44-34 with seven minutes on the clock.
Trailing at 57-44, the Lady T's used a furious rally to close the third quarter. DSU used a 10-0 run in the final 1:55 in the third period, as MU maintained its lead at 57-54. During Lady T's scoring run, Kennedy Wagner nailed down a pair of free-throws as well as a 3-pointer, followed by a lay-up by Shelby Vogel and a 3-pointer by Cassie Jones.
DSU could get no closer than three points at 59-56 with 9:21 remaining as MU pulled away for the victory. Midland was 7-of-14 from the field as well as 12-of-19 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Dakota State was 8-of-17 from the field and 3-of-7 free-throws.
Vogl tied her career-high of 25 points for the Lady T's. She was 10-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-9 3-pointers. Jones added 12 points off the bench. Patton scored nine points. Wagner scored eight points.
Britley Plautz collected 10 rebounds and registered two blocked shots for DSU. Vogel added seven rebounds. Wagner dished out five assists, while Vogel added three assists. Jamie Tebben stole the ball three times.
Four MU players scored in double figures, led by Maddie Egr with 26 points. She was 12-of-18 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds. Joelle Overkamp posted a double-double of 14 points and recorded 13 rebounds. Madison Severson had 13 points. Hilary Huss scored 11 points off the bench.
Megan Kucks and Overkamp each had four assists for the Warriors. Severson registered five steals. Egr and Overkamp each had three steals.
Midland shot 50.8 percent overall from the field (30-of-59) compared to Dakota State 42.6 percent (26-of-61). The Lady T's drained 9-of-22 3-pointers (40.9 percent), while the Warriors were 7-of-16 from the 3-point arc (43.8 percent).
MU was 18-of-30 from the free-throw line (60 percent). DSU went to the free-throw line 19 times, converting 13 free-throws (68.4 percent).
Both teams had 38 rebounds in the game.
Dakota State returns home Tuesday as they host NCAA Division III Bethany Lutheran (Minn.). Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse in Madison, S.D.
