Jackrabbits defeat Trojans in exhibition action at Frost Arena

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) played an exhibition men's basketball game Sunday afternoon, visiting NCAA Division I South Dakota State at Frost Arena.  The Jackrabbits defeated the Trojans 92-60.

Dakota State remained at 5-4 overall record.  South Dakota State, who earned their third straight win, improved to 6-2 overall record.

SDSU opened up the game by scoring five straight points in the first 53 seconds for a 5-0 lead.  The Trojans answered back by scoring eight straight points, thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Brendon Boomsma and Kevin Daniels followed by a dunk by Keeon Johnson.  DSU led SDSU 8-5 with 17:51 on the clock.

The Jackrabbits then used a 12-0 spurt to overtake a 17-8 lead with 14:54 remaining in the first half.  DSU could get no closer than five points at 17-12 with 13:34 left and 29-24 with 8:35 remaining.

South Dakota State closed the first half with a 16-5 run to grab a 45-29 halftime lead.  The Jackrabbits shot 51.6 percent from the field (16-of-31) in the first twenty minutes and 11-of-14 free-throws.  DSU was 11-of-33 from the field in the first-half, including 6-of-20 from the 3-point arc.

A lay-up by Justin Folkers and a 3-pointer by Johnson kicked off the second-half with Dakota State's 5-0 run, trimming SDSU's lead to 45-34.  The Jackrabbits were forced to burn one of their timeout.

Folkers added a lay-up to cut SDSU's lead to 46-36 with less than 17 minutes remaining.

The Jackrabbits closed the game by outscoring the Trojans 47-31 in the final twenty minutes.

Johnson led Dakota State with 11 points and pulled down six rebounds.  Brady Elder scored 10 points off the bench.  Folkers tallied eight points.  Bobby Farquah added seven points.  Boomsma and Daniels each had six points.  Maurice Arrington and Josh McGreal each tallied five points.

Daniels contributed five assists for the Trojans.  Arrington added three assists.  Johnson and Daniels each stole the ball twice.

Arrington earned seven rebounds for DSU.  Farquah had four rebounds.

Mike Daum scored 16 points for SDSU.  Reed Tellinghuisen added 14 points.  Brandon Key and David Jenkins each had 13 points.  Key had seven assists. 

Chris Howell grabbed eight rebounds for the Jackrabbits.  Tevin King, Lane Severyn, Tellinhuisen and Daum each had six rebounds.  Tellinghuisen had two steals.

South Dakota State shot 55.6 percent overall from the field (35-of-63) compared to Dakota State 34.8 percent (23-of-66).  The Trojans drained 11 3-pointers in 34 attempts while the Jackrabbits were 9-of-21 3-pointers.

SDSU went to the free-throw line 18 times, converting 13 free-throws (72.2 percent).  DSU was 3-of-5 free-throws (60.0 percent).

The Jackrabbits outscored the Trojans 48-16 inside the paint.  DSU outscored SDSU 11-10 in points off turnovers.

SDSU had plus-20 rebounding margin over DSU (48-28). 

Dakota State returns back to regular-season action this weekend, opening up their North Star Athletic Association conference play.  The Trojans kick off their 6-game North Star conference home stand versus Jamestown (N.D.) Friday evening.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse in Madison, S.D.
