MITCHELL, S.D. – Dordt (Iowa) drained seven 3-pointers to earn a 41-26 halftime advantage over Dakota State (S.D.) on the first day of the Doug Martin Classic, as part of the annual Mike Miller Classic Friday afternoon at the Corn Palace. The Defenders never looked back for a 90-72 non-conference victory over the Trojans, earning a season series sweep.
Dakota State suffered their fourth straight defeat, falling to 7-8 overall record. Dordt improved to 9-8 overall record.
DSU grabbed the first lead of the game at 2-0 after Justin Folkers' basket with 19 minutes, 5 seconds on the clock. Both teams traded leads in the first five minutes of the game.
Leading 8-6, Dordt went on to score eight straight points to post their first double-digit lead of the game at 16-6 with 11:25 on the clock. The Trojans ended that scoring drought after a field goal by Kevin Daniels with 11:09 left in the first-half (DSU trailed 16-8).
The Defenders outscored the Trojans 25-18 in the final 10:29 of the first-half for a fifteen-point lead. DC shot 41.7 percent from the field in the first-half (15-of-36, including 7-of-17 3-pointers). DSU was held to 35.5 percent from the field (11-of-31 and did not make a 3-pointer in six tries in the first twenty minutes of the game).
Dordt maintained their double-digit lead for the rest of the game. Dakota State could get no closer than 11 points at 64-53 after a 3-pointer by Maurice Arrington with 10:55 remaining in the game.
DC outscored DSU 49-46 in the second-half, despite Trojans 51.7 percent shooting from the field (DC shot 47.1 percent).
Four players scored in double digits for Dakota State, led by Daniels with 17 points (7-of-14 field goals and made both free-throw attempts). Brendon Boomsma added 13 points. Bobby Farquah scored 11 points off the bench. Arrington tallied 10 points. Folkers had eight points.
Farquah, Keeon Johnson and Josh McGreal each grabbed seven rebounds for DSU. Boomsma had four rebounds.
Farquah tied the DSU men's basketball single-game school record for most blocked shots with seven. He tied with two other players – Brian Bolin versus Mount Marty (S.D.) on Nov. 3, 2008 and Kyle Stratton versus Presentation (S.D.) during the 1996-97 season.
Daniels dished out four assists for the Trojans. Johnson added three assists. Folkers, Arrington, Boomsma and McGreal each registered a steal.
Jesse Jansma scored 16 points off the bench for the Defenders after he went 6-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-8 from the 3-point arc. Chad Barkema added 12 points. Andrew O'Donnell had 11 points. Alec Hendrickson had 10 points.
Josh Van Lingen had nine points and eight rebounds for DC. Barkema and O'Donnell each had six rebounds. Chandler Brunsting produced five assists.
Dordt shot 44.3 percent overall from the field (31-of-70) compared to Dakota State 43.3 percent (26-of-60). The Defenders were 12-of-30 from the 3-point line, while DSU was 5-of-17 3-pointers.
DC went to the free-throw line 24 times, making 16 free-throws (40.0 percent). DSU was 15-of-18 free-throws (83.3 percent).
Dordt outrebounded Dakota State 38-30. The Defenders outscored the Trojans 50-20 in bench points.
Dakota State returns back to the Corn Palace Saturday evening, facing the host-team No. 20-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) to conclude the Mike Miller/Doug Martin Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Mitchell.
