MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State (S.D.) Lady T's basketball team continued their six-game home stand in the month of December – their third game in five days – Tuesday evening, hosting No. 10-ranked Morningside (Iowa) at DSU Fieldhouse. The Mustangs defeated the Lady T's by the score of 95-51.
Dakota State, who played their second game against NAIA Division II Top 25 teams in five days, fell to 4-9 overall record. Morningside, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, lifted their overall record to 11-2.
The Mustangs opened up with back-to-back 3-pointers by Madison Braun, fueling to a 6-0 lead with 8 minutes, 49 seconds left in the first period.
The Lady T's answered back by scoring five straight points after a basket by Kennedy Wagner and a 3-pointer by Lindsey Vogl, trimming MC's lead to 6-5 with 7:50 to go in the first quarter.
Morningside then used a 9-0 scoring run to balloon their lead to 15-5 with 5:25 on the clock in the first quarter. The Mustangs held a 25-14 lead after first.
Dakota State could get no closer than nine points on three different occasions – a field goal by Britley Plautz to open the second quarter (25-16 with 9:43 on the clock), a basket by Wagner (27-18 with 8:27 to go in the first-half) and a 3-pointer by Leah Marsh (33-24 with 6:05 left in the second quarter).
The Mustangs outscored the Lady T's 32-12 in the second period to widen their lead to 57-26. Morningside shot 48.4 percent from the field (21-of-43 field goals), including 10-of-17 from the 3-point line (58.8 percent). Dakota State was 41.7 percent from the field (10-of-24) and 3-of-8 from the 3-point arc (37.5 percent).
MC held a 72-37 lead after the third period and outscored DSU 23-14 in the final quarter to secure the victory.
Shelby Vogel led the Lady T's with 10 points. Plautz and Cassie Jones each added eight points. Wagner and Alexis Evans each tallied seven points. Vogl had six points.
Plautz pulled down nine rebounds and recorded there blocks for Dakota State. Raven Patton and Jamie Tebben each had five rebounds. Patton registered four blocked shots. Plautz, Jones and Valerie Chastain each had a steal.
Braun scored a game-high 19 points for the Mustangs. She was 7-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-13 3-pointers. She also stole the ball eight times. Jenna Bork tallied 18 points off the bench, while Erin Schleicher added 15 points.
Grace Meyer dished out four assists for Morningside. Jordyn Moser, Braun, Mady Maly, Bork and Tayte Hansen each added three assists.
Schleicher earned six rebounds for MC. Lauren Lehmkuhl added five rebounds. Sydney Hupp recorded two blocked shots.
Morningside shot 41.2 percent overall from the field (35-of-85) compared to Dakota State 38.5 percent (20-of-52). The Mustangs were 14-of-37 from the 3-point line (37.8 percent), while the Lady T's were 6-of-22 3-pointers.
MC was 11-of-12 from the free-throw line (91.7 percent). DSU was 5-of-10 free-throws (50 percent).
The Mustangs outrebounded the Lady T's 44-40 in the game. Morningside outscored Dakota State 26-8 in second-chance points and 38-7 in points off turnovers.
Dakota State will be off until Saturday, Dec. 16 as they return back to North Star conference action. The Lady T's continue their home stand at DSU Fieldhouse versus Bellevue (Neb.) with a tip-off starting at 3 p.m. DSU also will play No. 16-ranked Mayville State (N.D.) on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m.
