DSU concludes NSAA Softball Crossover with a split versus UJ

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) concluded the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Softball Crossover Tournament Sunday morning at Presentation (S.D.) Dome versus Jamestown (N.D.).  The Jimmies shut down the Trojans 7-0 in the first game of the doubleheader.  DSU bounced back in the second game to hand UJ its first NSAA conference loss with a 6-4 victory.

Dakota State is 7-5 overall record and 3-3 record in the North Star conference play.  Jamestown is 8-4 overall record and 3-1 NSAA record.

The Trojans take a week off before kicking off their 12-game stretch in the Tucson (Ariz.) Softball Invitational.  DSU kicks off the invitational with a tripleheader on March 6, facing Aquinas (Mich.), Douglas (B.C.) and Madonna (N.D.).

Game 1 – Jamestown (N.D.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL

Jamestown limited Dakota State to three hits to earn a 7-0 game one victory.  The Jimmies recorded 12 hits in the game.

UJ opened up the game after Kaitlyn Combo's lead-off home run in the bottom second inning.  Emma Keller added a 2-RBI single to extend Jimmies' lead to 3-0.

Marissa Duchi and Keller each recorded an RBI single to make it 5-0 in favor of Jamestown in the bottom fourth inning.

The Jimmies scored once in the bottom fifth and another run scored in the sixth inning to make it 7-0.

Kailee McFadden had a double for the Trojans.  Audrey Kosman and Kelly Drake each had a single.

Keller went 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and drove in three RBIs for UJ.  Combo added a home run, single and two RBIs.  Duchi had two hits and an RBI.  Mikayla Frost, Kelly Halverson, Tifani Schorzman and Hannah Dunnigan each registered a hit.

Both teams left three runners on base.

Drake (L, 2-3) recorded the loss after tossing a complete game for the Trojans.  She allowed seven runs (three unearned) on 12 hits.

Dunnigan (W, 3-2) pitched a complete game victory for the Jimmies.  She limited the Trojans to three hits and recorded 13 strikeouts in the game.

Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 6, Jamestown (N.D.) 4 – FINAL

Schorzman hit an RBI single in the top first inning to give Jamestown their first lead of the game at 1-0 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Dakota State snapped their scoring drought with three runs scored in the bottom first frame.  Peyton Brokiewicz led off with a single.  Kayla Schmell recorded a bunt single to advance Brokiewicz to second base.  After Stewart reached safely on first base by a fielder's choice where Brokiewicz was safe at third base after UJ's defensive error, Jasmin Lucero produced a 2-RBI single to score Brokiewicz and Schmell to give DSU a 2-1 lead.

The Trojans made it 3-1 in the bottom first after Kosman's RBI fielder's choice to score Stewart (Lucero was out at second base).

Jamestown answered back with two runs scored in the top second to tie the game.  Miriah Yoder led off the Jimmies with a single.  Duchi hit an RBI double to score Yoder to cut DSU's lead to 3-2.  Kylie Macaig added an RBI single to score Duchi as the Jimmies knotted the game at 3-3.

With bases loaded situation and two outs in the top fourth, UJ regained their lead at 4-3 after Mikayla Frost recorded an RBI hit-by-pitch.

Dakota State scored twice in the bottom half of the fourth inning.  Kaity Barnes reached on base by a walk.  McFadden hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Barnes to second base.  Brokiewicz blasted an RBI double to score Barnes as the game was tied at 4-4.

Schmell followed that with a single to advance Brokiewicz to third base in the bottom fourth.  Schmell swiped to second base, and allowed Brokiewicz to score caused by UJ's defensive miscue on the same play.  DSU earned the lead by the score of 5-4.

Dakota State's defense prevented the Jimmies to score in the top fifth inning.  With runners on third and second bases, UJ's Duchi flied into a double play to right field (caught by Trojan McFadden) while Schorzman was tagged out at home (tagged by DSU's Lucero).

The Trojans extended their lead to 6-4 in the bottom fifth inning, thanks to a double by Tatum Ronke.  She advanced to third base after Emma Marsh's fly-out to center field.  Ronke swiped for home to give DSU a two-run lead.

DSU secured the game in the top seventh inning as the Jimmies left a runner on second base.

Both teams recorded 10 hits and 7 runners on base in the game.

Brokiewicz finished the game by going 3-of-4 with a double, two singles, an RBI and registered two RBIs for the Trojans.  Lucero added two singles and two RBIs.  Schmell had two singles.  Kosman and Barnes each had a hit and an RBI.  Ronke had a double.  Ronke, Brokiewicz and Schmell each had a stolen base.

Frost was 3-of-3 at the plate with three singles and an RBI for Jamestown.  Schorzman added three hits and an RBI.  Duchi and Macaig each had a hit and an RBI.  Combo recorded a single.

Kaysea Luna (W, 4-0) earned the victory in the pitching circle for Dakota State.  She worked for four innings and allowed four runs on eight hits.  Kosman (S, 1) recorded the save as she tossed three scoreless innings in relief.  She limited the Jimmies to two hits.

Keller started the game for the Jimmies after tossing one inning.  She gave up three runs (one unearned) on four hits.  Brittany Rheault (L, 3-2) took the loss after pitching three innings.  She gave up three runs (one unearned) on four hits.  Dunnigan pitched two scoreless innings, yielding the Trojans to two hits.
