La CROSSE, Wis. – Dakota State (S.D.) shot 49.1 percent overall from the field Friday evening at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium, kicking off their six-game North Star Athletic Association Women's Basketball road trip with an 81-62 victory over Viterbo (Wis.). DSU held VU to 32.4 field goal percentage in the game.
Dakota State lifted their overall record to 7-13 and moved in a three-way tie for fourth-place (Presentation, S.D. and Bellevue, Neb.) in the North Star conference standings with a 4-3 record. Viterbo lost their seventh straight game, dipping their overall record to 4-15 and 1-6 NSAA conference record.
The Lady T's opened up with an 8-5 early lead in the game. The V-Hawks answered back by scoring five straight points to overtake a 10-8 lead with 3 minutes, 52 seconds on the clock in the first-period.
DSU would close the first period on a 7-2 run to grab a 15-12 lead. Dakota State was 42.9 percent from the field (6-of-14) while holding Viterbo to 21.1 percent from the field (4-of-19).
The Lady T's kicked off the second quarter by using a 9-0 outburst to balloon their lead to 24-12, forcing the V-Hawks to burn a timeout with 7:41 left. DSU held on to a 38-29 halftime advantage over VU.
Dakota State was 46.4 percent from the field (13-of-28) in the first-half compared to Viterbo 28.2 percent (11-of-39).
DSU used another fast opening quarter run, propelling with a 9-2 run to kick off the third quarter for a 47-31 lead with 6:34 on the clock. The Lady T's maintained their double-digit lead for the rest of the period, holding a 53-41 lead by the end of the third.
Dakota State outscored Viterbo 28-21 in the final quarter to secure the victory. The Lady T's outscored the V-Hawks 43-33 in the final twenty minutes of the game.
Four DSU players scored in double figures, led by Lindsey Vogl with 21 points. She was 7-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-9 from the 3-point line and converted all three free-throw attempts. Britley Plautz added 18 points on her 8-of-12 field goals and 2-of-2 free-throws. Kennedy Wagner scored 15 points (3-of-4 field goals and 8-of-9 free-throws). Jamie Tebben tallied 14 points off the bench.
Tebben pulled down eight rebounds for Dakota State. Raven Patton and Plautz each added seven rebounds. Shelby Vogel had six rebounds. Plautz registered four blocks, while Patton had two blocks.
Wanger dished out six assists in the game for the Lady T's. She also stole the ball three times.
Alyssa Nilssen scored 13 points and recorded three steals for the V-Hawks. Alyssa Goode added 10 points from the bench. Ambree Schlosser had nine points and produced six assists. Hannah Anderson grabbed 10 rebounds.
Dakota State was 26-of-53 from the field compared to Viterbo 24-of-74 from the field. The V-Hawks were 6-of-23 3-pointers, while the Lady T's made 5-of-12 3-pointers.
DSU went to the free-throw line 29 times, making 24 free-throws (82.8 percent). VU struggled at the free-throw line, converting just eight free-throws in 15 tries (53.3 percent).
The Lady T's outrebounded the V-Hawks 47-35 in the game. DSU outscored VU 36-22 inside the paint.
Dakota State stays on the road Saturday afternoon, visiting Waldorf (Iowa) in another North Star Athletic Association conference action. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Hanson Fieldhouse in Forest City, Iowa.
