Trojans drop fourth straight NSAA Men's Basketball conference action

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Jamestown (N.D.) shot a sizzling 59.7 percent from the field Saturday evening, rolling past Dakota State (S.D.) 104-88 in a high scoring North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Men's Basketball conference action at Newman Arena.  The Trojans suffered their fourth straight NSAA conference defeat on their current six-game trip.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 9-14 and 3-7 record in North Star conference games.  Jamestown, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, improved to 15-6 overall record and 5-4 NSAA conference.

Holding a 17-13 lead, the Trojans went on a 10-4 scoring run to gain the first double-digit lead of the game at 27-17 with eleven minutes and forty-eight seconds on the clock.  The Jimmies would answer back with a 10-0 run to knot the game at 27-27 with 9:54 left in the first-half.

Knotted 48-48, the Jimmies outscored the Trojans 8-0 in the final 2:26 of the first-half to grab a 56-48 halftime lead.  There were a total of nine lead changes and six ties in the first twenty minutes of the game.  UJ shot 61.8 percent from the field (21-of-34), including 7-of-12 from the 3-point line in the first-half.  DSU was 55.9 percent from the field (19-of-34) and went 8-of-11 from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Trojans opened up the second-half with a 6-0 run to cut Jimmies' lead down to 56-54 with 18:24 remaining.  UJ then went on a 10-2 spurt to grab a 10-point lead at 66-56 with 15:36 on the clock.

Jamestown maintained their lead for the rest of the game to secure the victory.  Dakota State could get no closer than seven points at 92-85 after a 3-pointer by Justin Folkers with 4:14 to go

UJ closed the game with a 12-3 run in the final 2:41 of the game.

All five DSU starters scored in double-digits, led by Brendon Boomsma with 17 points.  He was 6-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-9 from the 3-point line.  He surpassed J.F. Jensen (157 3-pointers made from 2000-04) for third-most career 3-pointers made at DSU with 161 3-pointers made.

Keeon Johnson and Folkers each added 15 points for the Trojans.  Josh McGreal tallied 12 points.  Brady Elder scored 10 points.  Maurice Arrington had seven points, while Falcon Albers and Bobby Farquah each added six points.

Boomsma contributed seven assists for Dakota State.  Elder added five assists and stole the ball twice. 

Johnson led DSU with six rebounds.  Elder and Arrington each recorded four rebounds.  Arrington and Farquah each registered a block.

Leighton Sampson poured in a game-high 30 points for Jamestown.  He was 14-of-18 from the field.  Kevin Oberweiser posted a double-double of 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.  Sam Johnson was 7-of-11 from the 3-point line to earn 21 points.  Jon Purintun scored 16 points.

Johnson had eight rebounds and five assists for UJ.  Purintun produced a game-high eight assists.  Oberweiser and Purintun each recorded three steals.

Jamestown converted 37 field goals in 62 attempts compared to Dakota State 34-of-65 field goals (52.3 percent).  The Trojans drained 15 3-pointers in 27 tries (55.6 percent), while the Jimmies were 12-of-26 3-pointers (46.2 percent).

UJ went to the free-throw line 21 times, making 18 free-throws (85.7 percent).  DSU was 5-of-11 free-throws.

The Jimmies outrebounded the Trojans 36-27. 

Dakota State looks to stop their losing skid as they conclude their North Star 6-game road trip.  The Trojans look to earn their first road win of the season Friday as they visit Valley City State (N.D.).  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse in Valley City, N.D.

Next Saturday, DSU concludes the road trip at Dickinson State (N.D.).  The game will be held at Scott Gymnasium with a 6 p.m. (Central Time)/5 p.m. (Mountain Time) tip-off in Dickinson, N.D.
