ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) bounced back in the winning column Friday evening, rolling past Presentation (S.D.) in three straight sets in the North Star Athletic Association conference contest at Strode Center. The Trojans dominated the Saints 25-20, 25-16 and 25-16, notching their 15th win in the last 17 meetings.
DSU lifted their overall record to 12-10 and 5-4 record in North Star Athletic Association conference matches. PC lost 10 times in the last 11 matches, falling to 10-14 overall record and 2-7 NSAA conference record.
Dakota State won the first North Star meeting earlier this season in three straight sets at DSU Fieldhouse (25-19, 25-14 and 25-22) on Sept. 28.
FIRST SET
Dakota State and Presentation battled back and forth early in the first set. Trailing 11-9, the Trojans pulled away by using a 5-1 outburst for a 14-12 lead and never looked back. The Saints could get no closer than one point at 15-14 as DSU secured a 1-0 match lead after a 25-20 victory.
Dakota State hit .237 in the first set, smashing 12 kills and committed just three attack errors in 38 swings. Presentation was held to .103 hitting efficiency (11 kills with seven attack errors in 39 attempts).
SECOND SET
After Presentation scored its first two points of the second set for a 2-0 lead, Dakota State went on a 13-0 monstrous run to earn a 13-2 lead. During the Trojans' 13 consecutive points, Barbara Briceno recorded four service aces. DSU also got three kills from Maddie Polzin and two kills from Samantha Zell.
DSU recorded its biggest lead of the set at 21-9 before the Saints scored five straight points (21-14 DSU). The Trojans closed out with a kill by Polzin for a 25-16 victory, extending their match lead to 2-0.
Dakota State outhit Presentation 13-6 in the second set. The Trojans hit .114 (8 errors in 44 attempts) compared to the Saints .031 hitting percentage (5 errors in 32 attempts).
THIRD SET
DSU kicked off the third set by scoring four straight points for a 4-0 lead and never trailed to secure the victory. Leading 11-9, Dakota State went on a 5-0 run for a 16-9 lead. The Trojans secured the match after a kill by Briceno for a 25-16 victory.
Dakota State hit an impressive .310 in the set (14 kills with 5 errors in 29 attempts). Presentation registered a .121 hitting percentage (10 kills with 6 errors in 33 attempts).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Polzin led the Trojans' offensive attack with nine kills. Spreier and Zell each added eight kills and hit above .300. Briceno had seven kills.
Rachel Johnson contributed 18 set assists and eight digs for DSU. Nicole Sarringar produced 15 assists.
Briceno had a season-high five service aces for Dakota State. She also had 18 digs. Alwaise Villa tallied 12 digs. Zell registered four block assists. Kelsey Pearson had three block assists.
Kayla Wolfe smashed eight kills for the Saints. Olivia Stet added seven kills. Maddie Goetz posted a double-double of 11 assists and 12 digs.
Joely Roe led PC's defense with 19 digs.
Dakota State hit .207 in the match (39 kills with 16 errors in 111 swings) and held Presentation to .087 hitting percentage (27 kills with 18 errors in 104 attempts).
The Trojans produced 36 set assists compared to the Saints 21 assists. DSU had nine service aces, while PC had three aces. Dakota State registered six blocks compared to Presentation five blocks.
UP NEXT
Dakota State continues their North Star Athletic Association conference action Saturday, traveling to Mayville State (N.D.). The junior varsity match kicks off at 10 a.m., followed by the varsity match at 12 p.m. Both matches will be held at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville.
Presentation stays home Saturday afternoon for the North Star conference match versus Bellevue (Neb.) at 1 p.m.
