MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) hit .295 Wednesday evening at DSU Fieldhouse, completing their four-match home stand with a 3-0 rout over in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) in a non-conference volleyball match. The Trojans extended their season-high winning streak to five matches, winning by the set scores of 25-13, 25-17 and 25-14.
Dakota State lifted their overall record to 10-7, including a 4-1 record at home. Mount Marty dropped their sixth straight match, falling to 3-15 overall record. The Trojans recorded their seventh win in the last eight meetings with the Lancers.
Both teams will meet for the second meeting of the season at Yankton, S.D. twenty-one (21) days later on Oct. 24.
FIRST SET
Dakota State scored the first three points of the opening set and never look back. Holding a 10-9 lead, the Trojans sparked a 7-0 outburst to widen their lead to 17-9. A kill by Maddie Polzin and Kaylee Spreier closed the first set with a 25-13 victory for the Trojans, cruising to a 1-0 match lead.
DSU hit an impressive .406 hitting percentage (14 kills with just one attack error in 32 swings). MMC was held to .083 hitting percentage (9 kills with 6 errors in 36 attempts).
SECOND SET
The Trojans used another fast start to kick off the second set, opening up with a 6-2 lead. After the Lancers trim their deficit to 8-6, Dakota State went on to outscore Mount Marty 12-4 for a 21-10 lead.
Anna Schwint smashed a kill to close the second set at 25-17, extending DSU's lead to 2-0.
Dakota State outhit Mount Marty 13-9 in the second set. The Lancers recorded a .206 hitting percentage (2 errors in 34 attempts) compared to the Trojans' .200 hitting efficiency (6 errors in 35 attempts).
THIRD SET
DSU raced to an 8-3 lead in the third set. The Lancers could not get no closer than four points at 8-4 as the Trojans went on a 9-3 run to earn a double-digit lead at 17-7.
At 20-13, Dakota State closed the match with a 5-1 run for a 25-14 victory. The Trojans hit .286 in the third set (12 kills with 4 errors in 28 attempts). The Lancers were held to .033 hitting percentage (6 kills with 5 errors in 30 attempts).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Dakota State used a balanced offensive attack, led by Barbara Briceno with nine kills. She hit .364 in the match. Samantha Zell and Polzin each added seven kills. Gabby Herlyn (.750 hitting percentage) and Schwint (.455 hitting efficiency) each tallied six kills.
Nicole Sarringar produced 16 set assists for the Trojans. Rachel Johnson added 13 assists. Sarringar, Johnson and Kaylee Spreier each registered a service ace.
Briceno led DSU's defense with 13 digs. Alwaise Villa added 12 digs. Zell had four block assists. Herlyn recorded three block assists.
Brooke Bennett smashed seven kills for Mount Marty. Elizabeth Watchorn and Mikaela Ahredt each added six kills. Watchorn had 14 digs. Alex Bargstadt posted 20 assists.
Dakota State totaled 39 kills in the match compared to Mount Marty 24 kills. The Trojans committed just 11 attack errors in 95 attempts. The Lancers were held to .111 hitting percentage (13 errors in 99 attempts).
DSU was 91.9 percent from the serving line with three aces and six errors in 74 serves. MMC struggled at the serving line, posting 77.8 percent after committing 10 service errors in 45 serves (2 service aces).
The Trojans registered five team blocks (14 block assists), while the Lancers had two team blocks (4 block assists).
Dakota State swept Mount Marty in junior varsity match in two straight sets (25-18 and 25-5).
UP NEXT
Dakota State swings back on the road with a pair of North Star Athletic Association conference matches this weekend. The Trojans visit Waldorf (Iowa) Friday evening. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Hanson Fieldhouse in Forest City, Iowa.
DSU concludes their first-half portion of the NSAA conference schedule at No. 4-ranked Viterbo (Wis.). The match is slated to play at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium in La Crosse Wis. at 1 p.m.
