SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Briar Cliff (Iowa) shot a sizzling 51.4 percent overall from the field Tuesday evening, rolling past Dakota State (S.D.) 106-71 in a non-conference women's basketball contest at Newman Flanagan Center.
The Lady T's fell to 0-2 overall record. The Chargers were playing their season opening game. Both teams will be meeting for their second meeting on Dec. 9 at DSU Fieldhouse.
DSU opened up with a 2-0 lead after a basket by Ashlyn Macdoanld with eight minutes and sixteen seconds on the clock. After BCU led 3-2, Cora Peterson and Raven Patton each made a basket to put DSU up at 6-3.
The Chargers went on a 13-0 scoring tear to earn the first double-digit lead of the game at 16-6 with 3:05 on the clock in the first period. DSU closed the first quarter with an 8-4 run to cut BCU's lead to 20-14.
Briar Cliff outscored Dakota State 34-15 in the second period to earn a 54-29 halftime advantage. The Chargers shot 46.2 percent from the field (18-of-39) in the first twenty minutes compared to the Lady T's 12-of-35 field goals (34.3 percent). BCU converted 13-of-22 free-throws (59.1 percent) while DSU was 4-of-6 free-throws.
BCU outscored DSU 52-42 in the second-half to secure the victory.
Thirteen different Lady T's scored in the game. Alexis Robson led DSU with 13 points (7-of-10 free-throws). Jessi Giles added nine points. McKenzie Hermanson and Alexis Evans each tallied eight points.
Giles pulled down six rebounds for Dakota State. Patton added four rebounds.
Olivia Breske dished out four assists for the Lady T's. Robson and Cheylee Nagel stole the ball three times.
Four BCU players scored in double-digits, led by Anna Reifenrafth who scored 22 points off the bench (8-of-13 field goals, 4-of-8 3-pointers). Alyssa Carley added 20 points (8-of-16 field goals). Taylor Wagner had 16 points and produced nine assists. Breanna Allen and Mya Hendry each scored 10 points.
Logan Ehlers recorded nine points and collected nine rebounds for the Chargers.
Briar Cliff shot 37-of-72 from the field, including 13-of-25 from the 3-point arc (52 percent). Dakota State was 22-of-66 field goals (33.3 percent) and 5-of-33 3-pointers (15.2 percent).
DSU converted 22-of-33 free-throws (66.7 percent). BCU struggled by making 19 free-throws in 35 attempts (54.3 percent).
The Chargers outrebounded the Lady T's 52-36 in the game.
Dakota State continues their action this weekend as they play in the third annual South Dakota/NAIA Basketball Pentagon Classic. The Lady T's take on No. 2-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Saturday evening. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. at Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.
DSU concludes the two-day classic on Sunday versus Mount Marty (S.D.) at 12 p.m.
