Warriors halt Trojans' five-match winning streak in volleyball

FOREST CITY, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) could not extend their season-high five-match winning streak Friday evening, falling to Waldorf (Iowa) in four sets (25-15, 20-25, 25-22 and 25-17) in the North Star Athletic Association conference action at Hanson Fieldhouse.  The Trojans committed 32 attack errors and 11 reception errors in the defeat.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 10-8 and 3-3 record in the North Star conference contests.  Waldorf improved to 3-14 overall record and 2-4 NSAA conference record.

Both teams will meet for the second North Star conference meeting at DSU Fieldhouse on Nov. 2.

FIRST SET

Waldorf and Dakota State struggled offensively in the opening set.  The Warriors opened up with a 9-3 lead before the Trojans trimmed their deficit to 11-8.

WU widen their lead to 21-10 after a 10-2 scoring outburst and never looked back.  Waldorf secured a 1-0 match lead after winning the first set at 25-15.

The Warriors had seven kills and recorded six attack errors in 25 attempts for a hitting percentage of .040.  The Trojans registered five kills, but committed 10 attack errors in 28 swings (negative .179 hitting efficiency).

SECOND SET

Dakota State only trailed once in the second set at 1-0 and even the match at 1-1.  The Trojans went on an 8-3 scoring tear to grab an 8-4 lead.  The Warriors rallied back to tie the second set at 18-18.  DSU would answer back by closing the second set with a 7-2 run for a 25-20 victory.

The Trojans outhit the Warriors 12-5 in the second set.  DSU registered a hitting percentage of .056 (10 attack errors in 36 attempts) and held WU to minus .121 hitting efficiency (9 errors in 33 swings).

THIRD SET

Waldorf and Dakota State recorded 12 ties in a see-saw battle in the third set.  Knotted at 21-21, the Warriors would close the third set with a 4-1 run for a 25-22 victory to regain a 2-1 match lead.

WU smashed 13 kills in the third set, with five errors in 39 attempts for a hitting percentage of .205.  DSU recorded a hitting efficiency of .150 (12 kills with 6 errors in 40 swings).

FOURTH SET

The Warriors used a strong closing run in the fourth set to secure a 3-1 match victory.  Tied at 16-16, WU outscored DSU 9-1 for a 25-17 victory.

Waldorf hit .412 in the fourth set, smashing 16 kills and only committed two attack errors in 34 attempts.  Dakota State was held to .083 hitting percentage (9 kills with 6 errors in 36 attempts).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Samantha Zell led the Trojans' offense attack with 11 kills and hit .259.  Maddie Polzin added nine kills.  Kaylee Spreier and Barbara Briceno each tallied eight kills.

Nicole Sarringar produced 17 set assists for DSU.  Rachel Johnson added 15 assists. 

Alwaise Villa collected 21 digs for Dakota State.  Briceno added 14 digs.  Peyton Groft recorded eight digs.  Villa had three service aces.  Polzin, Zell, Spreier, Gabby Herlyn and Anna Schwint each registered two block assists.

Kyra Platzek led the Warriors with a double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs.  Sarah Williams added 11 kills.  Elisabeth Tramm paced Waldorf's offense with 29 assists.

Adreanna Vetter led WU's defense with 19 digs.  Emily Stolpp had four block assists. 

Waldorf recorded 11 service aces in the match, but committed 12 service errors.  Kelsey Sederquest had four service aces.  Channing Manske, Tramm and Platzek each recorded two aces.

WU outhit DSU 41-38 in the match.  The Warriors hit .145 (22 attack errors in 131 swings) compared to the Trojans .043 hitting percentage (32 attack errors in 140 attempts).

Dakota State had 63 digs compared to Waldorf 57 digs.  Both teams had six blocks. 

UP NEXT

Dakota State concludes their first-half portion of the North Star Athletic Association conference schedule with a road match at NSAA's conference leader and No. 4-ranked Viterbo (Wis.).  First serve is set for 1 p.m. at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium in La Crosse, Wis.

Waldorf remains home Saturday for a North Star match with No. 20-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) at 5 p.m.
