Trojans hit century mark for second straight game, defeat Lions

ELLENDALE, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) scored over 100 points for the second straight game Tuesday evening, rolling past Trinity Bible (N.D.) 112-73 in a non-conference men's basketball action at Ray Ulmer Fieldhouse.

The Trojans won their second straight game, lifting their overall record to 2-4.  The Lions fell to 0-3 overall record.

Dakota State and Trinity Bible went through four lead changes and four ties through the first seven-and-half minutes of the game.  The Lions had a 13-8 lead, but the Trojans answered back by knotting the game at 15-15 with 14:06 clock after a 7-2 run.

Tied at 20-20, DSU sparked a 14-0 outburst after hitting four straight 3-pointers from Cody Muilenburg, Brady Elder (2 3-pointers) and Carson Rentz.  Rentz also added a pair of free-throws during the Trojans' scoring surge.  He hit a 3-pointer to give Trojans a 34-20 lead with less than nine minutes go before intermission.

Dakota State led 55-36 at halftime.  DSU shot 15-of-32 from the field in the first-half (46.9 percent), including 7-of-18 from the 3-point line.  The Trojans were near perfect from the free-throw line by making 18 free-throws in 19 tries.  Trinity Bible was 42.4 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes (14-of-33) and 1-of-12 3-pointers.  TBC was 7-of-11 free-throws.

DSU maintained its double-digit lead for the rest of the game.  TBC could get no closer than 19 points at 57-38 with 19:32 remaining.  The Trojans outscored the Lions 57-37 in the second-half, thanks to DSU's 60 percent shooting from the field (21-of-35) and 8-of-14 3-pointers. 

All five Trojan starters scored in double-digits and hit at least a 3-pointer in the game.  Justin Folkers paced DSU with 23 points and six rebounds.  He was 8-of-9 from the free-throw line.  Elder added 17 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists.  Josh McGreal posted a double-double of 15 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. 

Rentz scored 18 points off the bench (7-of-7 free-throws) for DSU.  He also had four assists.  Muilenburg had 13 points.  Brady Van Holland scored 10 points.  Anthony Costello had eight points. 

McGreal, Van Holland and Will Parry each produced three assists for Dakota State.  Elder, Van Holland, Muilenburg, Logan Knutson, Parry and Mitchell Biever each registered a steal.

Jamal Williams and Jeremy Blanchette each scored 28 points for the Lions.  Williams had eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. 

Dakota State shot 36-of-67 from the field (53.7 percent) compared to Trinity Bible 29-of-63 (46 percent).  The Trojans drained 15 3-pointers in 32 attempts (46.9 percent), while the Lions were 4-of-26 3-pointers (15.4 percent).

DSU made 25 free-throws in 28 attempts (89.3 percent).  TBC converted 11 free-throws in 18 tries (61.1 percent).

The Trojans outrebounded the Lions 35-28 in the game.  DSU's bench outscored TBC's bench 34-9.

Dakota State returns home next Tuesday (Nov. 20) as they host Dordt (Iowa) in a non-conference game.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse in Madison, S.D.
