Bruins shut down Trojans in North Star men's basketball opener

MADISON, S.D. – Bellevue (Neb.) held Dakota State (S.D.) to 34.7 field goal percentage Thursday evening, rolling to a 66-45 North Star Athletic Association men's basketball conference opener victory at DSU Fieldhouse.  Forty-six points of the team's 66 points came inside the paint for the Bruins, while the Trojans registered 16 points in the paint.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 2-8 and 0-1 NSAA conference record.  Bellevue lifted their overall record to 5-8 and 1-0 NSAA.

Brady Van Holland and Justin Folkers opened up the game with a pair of baskets for DSU 4-0 lead.  The Trojans led at 8-6 before the Bruins took control for the rest of the game.

BU held DSU scoreless for a span of five-plus minutes, using a 14-0 outburst to earn a 20-8 lead after a basket by Josh Lindsey-Hunter with 8:10 left in the first-half.

Brady Elder ended Trojans' scoring drought with a basket with less than eight minutes remaining before halftime (DSU trailed 20-10).

DSU's Anthony Costello drained a half-court 3-point shot as the first-half ended, trailing 37-25 to the Bruins.

Bellevue shot 46.9 percent from the field (15-of-32) in the first twenty minutes of the game compared to Dakota State 34.8 percent (8-of-23).

The Trojans could get no closer than ten points after Josh McGreal began the second-half with a basket inside the paint (DSU trailed 37-27).

BU went on a 17-4 scoring tear to balloon their lead to 54-31 with 10:46 left.

Bellevue outscored Dakota State 29-20 in the second-half.

Costello scored 12 points off the bench for the Trojans.  McGreal and Elder each added eight points.  Van Holland tallied seven points and dished out four assists. 

McGreal pulled down eight rebounds for DSU.  Costello collected seven rebounds.  Cody Muilenburg registered two blocked shots.  Elder stole the ball three times.

Josh Meier led the Bruins with 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  Sequan Walker added 10 points.  Jaron Dickson had a game-high 10 rebounds.   Dickson and Connor Dukes each produced four assists.  Lindsey-Hunter stole the ball four times.

Bellevue shot 47.4 percent overall from the field (27-of-57).  Dakota State made 17 baskets in 49 attempts.  The Trojans went 5-of-15 from the 3-point arc (33.3 percent), while the Bruins were 4-of-18 3-pointers (22.2 percent).

BU was 8-of-12 free-throws (66.7 percent).  DSU made 6-of-8 free-throws.

The Bruins outrebounded the Trojans 40-27 (14-7 on offensive rebounds).  BU outscored DSU 15-2 in points off turnovers.

Dakota State heads to Sioux City, Iowa on Saturday for a non-conference contest at No. 8-ranked Briar Cliff (Iowa).  The game is scheduled to tip off at 3 p.m. at Newman Flaagan Center.
