Lancers sweep Trojans in non-conference baseball action

YANKTON, S.D. – The Dakota State (S.D.) University Trojan Baseball team returned back to action Wednesday afternoon for the first time since March 8.  The Trojans visit Mount Marty (S.D.) in the in-state non-conference battle at Riverside Park.  DSU's Jordan Hofer blasted a pair of home runs for the day, but it was not enough as the Lancers swept the Trojans by the identical scores of 6-1.

Dakota State fell to 0-10 overall record before heading to their North Star conference season opener this weekend.  Mount Marty lifted their overall record to 14-6.

The Trojans face Mayville State (N.D.) in the North Star's four-game conference weekend series at Riverside Park.  Both teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. in Yankton.

Game 1 – Mount Marty (S.D.) 6, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

After a scoreless first inning in the first game of the doubleheader, Mount Marty exploded for three runs in the bottom second frame to grab a 3-0 lead.  The Lancers recorded a pair of RBI singles by Hunter Hallock and Phillip Vornhagen, while the Trojans committed three defensive errors in the second inning.

MMC added three runs in the bottom fifth inning to extend their lead to 6-0.

Hofer smashed a lead-off solo home run in the top sixth inning as the Trojans trailed 6-1.

Hofer finished the game by going 2-of-2 at the plate with a home run, double and an RBI for Dakota State.  He also had a walk.  Jalen Boyd added a single.  Justin Odlum, Smith Kemper, Marcos Alvarez, Hayden Klibbe and Zach Sutera each reached on base by a walk.

Dyshawn Proudlove and Hofer each swiped one base in the game for DSU.

Justin Miller, Hallock and Vornhagen each had a single for Mount Marty.  Hallock drove in two runs.  Mason Kaitfors had an RBI.

Both teams registered three hits in the game.  The Trojans committed four defensive errors compared to the Lancers one miscue.  DSU left six runners on base, while MMC led three runners on base.

Connor Nagel (L, 0-2) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He worked two innings and allowed three runs (two unearned) on two hits.  Kyle Grant and Andrew Dayton each tossed a scoreless inning.  Hunter Hazen and Trey Randel also pitched in relief.

Blake Svoboda started the game for Mount Marty, pitching two scoreless innings and recorded four strikeouts.  Austin Wise (W, 2-1) earned the victory as he worked for three scoreless innings in relief.  He gave up two hits.  Evan Steiner pitched in the sixth inning and allowed a run.  Drue Soukup pitched a shutout seventh inning to close the game.

Game 2 – Mount Marty (S.D.) 6, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

Mount Marty (S.D.) jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first three innings and never looked back to complete the doubleheader sweep over Dakota State.

Gabe Leon had an RBI single in the bottom first frame for 1-0 MMC lead.  The Lancers extended their lead to 3-0 after a 2-RBI single by Jared Miller in the second inning.  Mount Marty made it 4-0 in the bottom third inning caused by DSU's defensive miscue.

Hofer blasted another lead-off home run in the top sixth inning as the Trojans cut MMC's lead to 4-1.  It was his third home run of the season, his ninth home run during his career at DSU (tied for sixth most career home run in the Trojan Baseball school record book).

Mount Marty added two runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to balloon their lead to 6-1.

Hofer was 1-of-3 at the plate with a home run and an RBI for Dakota State.  Alvarez and Proudlove each added a single.  Nagel and Alvarez each reached on base by a walk. 

Mimmack was 2-of-3 at the plate with a double, single and an RBI for Mount Marty.  Justin Miller added two hits and two RBIs.  Leon had a single and an RBI.  Colin Muth had a single.

MMC outhit DSU 6-3 in the game.  The Lancers left six runners on base compared to the Trojans five runners left on base.

Garrison Collier (L, 0-3) took the loss after pitching 1 1/3 innings on the mound for Dakota State.  He allowed three runs on four hits.  Dayton worked for two outs in the bottom second inning in relief.  Trae Ramsey tossed the third inning after giving up an unearned run.  Micah DeHarty pitched two scoreless innings.  Hayden Klibbe worked the sixth inning and allowed two runs.

Derek Miller (W, 4-1) earned the victory after tossing two shutout innings for Mount Marty.  Jeremiah Mauch pitched the next two innings and allowed two hits.  Jerry Reyes worked a shutout fifth inning.  Muth gave up a run in the sixth inning, while Deric Denning closed out the game in the seventh inning.
