YANKTON, S.D. - Dakota State (S.D.) was unable to earn their first win of the season in the third game of the tripleheader at Riverside Park. Knotted at 6-6 after two innings, Mayville State scored 10 runs to post a 16-6 victory in five innings.
Jonathan Pluth recorded an RBI single in the opening inning to give Comets a 1-0 lead.
The Trojans exploded for three runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Jalen Boyd reached on base by a walk. He advanced to second base after a passed ball by MSU. Samuel Drummond also reached on base by a walk.
DSU scored twice after Proudlove hit a single, scoring Boyd and Drummond for a 2-1 lead. On the same play, Dyshawn Proudlove advanced to third base after a defensive error by the Comets.
Connor Nagel drilled an RBI double to score Proudlove as Dakota State's lead ballooned to 3-1.
With bases loaded situation in the top second inning, Riley Nelson hit a 2-RBI single as the Comets knotted the game at 3-3. MSU continued its scoring outburst after a 2-RBI double by Andrew Hill for 5-3 lead. The Comets made it 6-3 after a defensive error committed by the Trojans.
Dakota State answered back with three runs scored in the bottom second inning. Micah DeHarty hit a single with one out. He advanced to third base after a defensive error committed by MSU's pitcher. Boyd produced an RBI single to score DeHarty as Trojans cut Comets' lead to 6-4.
Drummond followed up with his second walk of the game and advanced Boyd to second base in the bottom second for DSU. Jordan Hofer added a walk to set up a bases loaded situation. Nagel hit a two-out 2-RBI single to score Boyd and Drummond, tying the game at 6-6.
Mayville State scored four times in the top third inning to earn a 10-6 lead. The Comets plated six runs in the fifth inning and sealed the victory.
Nagel was 2-of-3 at the plate with a double, single and drove in three RBIs for Dakota State. Boyd added a single and an RBI. Zach Sutera had a single. Drummond reached on base by a walk two times. Boyd and Hofer each had a walk.
Nelson was 4-of-4 at the plate with four runs scored and three RBIs for Mayville State. Pluth added three hits and tallied a game-high six RBIs. Zach Foster had a hit and three RBIs. Spencer Merle registered two hits and scored twice. Hill had a hit, two RBIs and scored three runs.
The Comets had 12 hits in the game, while the Trojans recorded six hits.
Hunter Hazen worked for 2 1/3 innings and allowed 10 runs (three unearned) on seven hits. Trae Ramsey (L, 0-1) recorded the loss after pitching for two outs, giving up four runs on two hits. Tyler Stading worked for two scoreless outs in the third inning. Kyle Grant pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief, giving up six runs (five unearned runs) on four hits. Christian Sanchez pitched the final out of the top fifth inning.
Austin Herrington started the game for MSU, giving up three runs (two unearned) on one hit. Oz Escobar pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on three hits. Parker Stohr (W, 3-1) earned the victory after tossing two scoreless innings in relief. He limited DSU to one hit and recorded three strikeouts. Kalton Agnes closed the game in the fifth inning with one hit allowed.
