PINEVILLE, La. – NCAA Division III Louisiana College outscored Dakota State (S.D.) 30-6 for a doubleheader baseball sweep at Billy Allgood Field Wednesday. The Wildcats defeated the Trojans by the scores of 13-3 and 17-3.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 0-6. Louisiana College lifted their overall record to 9-2.
The Trojans close out their Louisiana road trip Thursday afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader at LSU-Alexandria. The first game of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Generals Field in Alexandria, La.
Game 1 – Louisiana College 13, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL
Louisiana College scored three runs in the first two innings of the first game, racing to a 6-1 lead.
The Trojans earned its first run of the game in the top second frame. Connor Nagel kicked off the second inning by hit-by-pitch. Justin Odlum followed up with a single and advanced Nagel to second base. Samuel Drummond recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Nagel to third and Odlum to second base.
Zach Sutera produced an RBI single to score Nagel as DSU trailed 3-1 in the top second inning with two outs.
LC exploded for seven runs to widen their lead to 13-1 in the bottom fifth inning.
With bases loaded situation in the top sixth inning, DSU added a run after Jalen Boyd's RBI to cut Louisiana College's lead to 13-2.
Jordan Hofer blasted a solo home run in the top seventh inning as Trojans reduced their deficit to 13-3.
Boyd was 2-of-3 at the plate with an RBI and reached on base by a walk for DSU. Hofer had a home run and an RBI. Dyshawn Proudlove hit a double. Sutera collected a single, RBI and swiped one base. Derek Degnan and Odlum each tallied a hit.
Deauton Delgado had a home run, double and drove in two runs for LC. Duncan Cornfoot and Zane Corbell each added two hits and two RBIs.
Louisiana College outhit Dakota State 13-7 in the game. The Trojans left eight runners on base compared to the Wildcats five runners left on base.
Garrison Collier (L, 0-2) took the loss on the pitching mound for DSU. He tossed four innings allowed nine runs (one unearned) on 10 hits. Chrisitan Sanchez worked in the bottom fifth for one out (allowed four runs – on unearned) on two hits. Mitchell Biever closed out the fifth inning (two outs) in relief for the Trojans. Andrew Dayton pitched a shutout sixth inning.
Clayton Noakes started the game for LC. He tossed three innings, limiting the Trojans to one run on three hits. Hunter Eyre (W, 1-0) earned the victory after pitching three innings in relief. He gave up one unearned run on two hits and struck out three DSU's batters. Hunter Parker worked in the seventh inning, giving up a run on two hits.
Game 2 – Louisiana College 17, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL
Dakota State grabbed the first lead of the second game of the doubleheader, thanks to back-to-back doubles by Drummond and Hofer. Hofer registered an RBI double with one out to score Drummond for DSU's 1-0 lead.
Louisiana College poured in nine runs in the bottom half of the first inning to grab a 9-1 lead over the Trojans. The Wildcats scored five more runs in the second inning to balloon their lead to 14-1.
DSU added two runs in the top third. Drummond and Hofer led off with back-to-back singles (Drummond advanced to third after Hofer's single). Proudlove reached on base by a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans.
Nagel followed up with an RBI walk to score Drummond as Dakota State trailed 14-2. Hofer scored on LC's balk as DSU reduced their deficit to 14-3.
The Wildcats scored two more runs in the bottom fifth and one run in the sixth inning to complete the final score.
Drummond went 3-of-4 at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored for DSU. Hofer added two hits and an RBI. Nagel had an RBI. Boyd had a single.
Steven Pizano was 3-of-3 at the plate for LC. He had two runs scored and an RBI. Sully Martin added two hits and three RBIs. Brady Atkins, Dustin Brown, Blaine Ouber, Noakes and Zane Corbell each had a hit and an RBI.
Louisiana College tallied 15 hits in the game compared to Dakota State six hits. The Trojans committed four defensive errors while the Wildcats with zero miscues. DSU's defense recorded two double players in the game.
Tyler Stading (L, 0-1) recorded the loss despite giving up five runs in the first inning for DSU. Dakota State used six different pitchers (Hunter Hazen, Kyle Grant, Dayton, Trey Randel and Kyle Gosh) in relief.
Keven Mahl, Jr. started the game and tossed the first two innings for LC. He gave up three runs on four hits. The Wildcats also used six different pitchers in relief. Caleb Nunez (W, 1-0) earned the win for Louisiana College.
