Crusaders roll past Trojans in Tucson (Ariz.) Softball Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – Madonna (Mich.) raced to a 5-0 lead over Dakota State (S.D.) after the first inning Wednesday at Lincoln Park as part of Tucson (Ariz.) Softball Invitational.  The Crusaders rolled past Trojans by the score of 12-2 in five innings.

Dakota State fell to 3-9 overall record.  Madonna, receiving votes in the NAIA Softball Coaches' Preseason Top 25 national poll, raised their overall record to 8-6.

Madonna produced six hits and scored five runs in the bottom first inning, racing to a 5-0 lead.

The Trojans scored its first run of the game in the top second frame.  Xitlali Lopez led off with a single.  Lopez advanced to second base after Peyton Brokiewicz's ground out.  Audrey Kosman drilled an RBI double to score Lopez as DSU trailed 5-1.

Dakota State added a run in the top third inning, thanks to Kailee McFadden's lead-off double.  Lopez hit an RBI single to score McFadden as the Trojans trim Crusaders' lead down to 5-2.

Madonna exploded for six runs in the bottom half of the third inning, widening their lead to 11-2.  The Crusaders had a 2-RBI double by Julia Cavagnini and a 3-RBI triple by Sarah Holton.  MU added a run in the bottom fourth inning to make it 12-2 and secured the game in five innings.

Lopez and McFadden each went 2-of-3 at the plate for Dakota State.  Lopez and Kosman each contributed an RBI.  Kosman and McFadden each had a double.  Melissa Krapf recorded a single.

Holton was 2-of-2 at the plate with a triple, single and drove in three runs for Madonna.  Cavagnini added a double and three RBIs.  Kerstyn Comerzan had a double and two RBIs. 

MU outhit DSU 12-6 in the game.  The Trojans left seven runners on base, while the Crusaders had two runners left on base.

Kosman (L, 0-3) recorded the loss in the pitching circle for Dakota State.  She tossed 2 1/3 innings and gave up 11 runs on 11 hits.  Kelly Drake pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief, allowing one run on one hit.

Madisen Henry (W, 3-3) earned a complete game victory for Madonna.  She gave up two runs on six hits in five innings.

Dakota State looks to snap their losing skid as they face Grace (Ind.) in the night cap.
