JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) jumped to a 2-0 early lead Friday evening in nightcap of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball Triangular versus No. 16-ranked Jamestown (N.D.) at Jack Brown Stadium. The Jimmies scored 16 unanswered runs, scoring at least a run in every inning, and rolled to a 16-3 victory over the Trojans.
Dakota State fell to 4-26 overall record and 4-15 record in North Star conference play. Jamestown, who went 2-0 record in Friday's triangular including an 18-5 victory over Viterbo (Wis.), raised their overall record to 35-7 and 12-6 NSAA conference record.
Alec Gannon opened up the game with a walk for the Trojans. He advanced to third base after a passed ball by UJ. Micah DeHarty hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Gannon to third base. Samuel Drummond drilled an RBI triple to score Gannon to give DSU its first lead of the game at 1-0.
Dakota State made it 2-0 as Justin Odlum followed up with an RBI single to score Drummond in the top first inning.
With bases loaded situation with one out in the bottom half of the first frame, Quinn Irey hit an RBI sacrifice fly as the Jimmies trimmed Trojans' lead to 2-1.
Jamestown scored twice in the bottom second inning to earn a 3-2 lead. Taichi Sasaki had an RBI single and added a run caused by DSU's defensive error.
Kaleb Binstock led off with a solo home run in the bottom third to balloon UJ's lead to 4-2. The Jimmies added a run to make it 5-2 when Drake Pilat hit a single, followed by an RBI double by Irey.
Binstock hit his second home run of the game in the bottom fourth, widening Jamestown's lead to 7-2.
UJ exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by Scooter Turin's 3-run home run to expand their lead to 15-2.
Luke Rehn hit an RBI single in the bottom sixth inning as the Jimmies extended their lead to 16-2.
Dakota State snapped their scoring drought with a run scored in the top seventh inning. Zach Sutera led off with a walk. Derek Degnan hit a single and advanced Sutera to third base. Marcos Alvarez recorded an RBI ground out to score Sutera as DSU trailed 16-3.
The Trojans left one runner on base when the game ended, sealing the victory for the Jimmies.
Odlum went 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and an RBI for Dakota State. Drummond added a triple and an RBI. Alvarez had a single and an RBI. Degnan tallied a single and a walk. Sutera reached on base by a walk twice. Gannon had a walk and a run scored.
Binstock was 3-of-4 with two home runs and drove in four runs. Turin added a home run and three RBIs. Sasaki had two hits and three RBIs. Irey recorded a double and two RBIs. Pete Pennylegion had two singles.
UJ outhit DSU 17-5 in the game.
Tyler Stading (L, 0-2) took the loss on the pitching mound for DSU. He tossed 4 1/3 innings and gave up 10 runs (four unearned) on 11 hits. He recorded a game-high four strikeouts. Dyshawn Proudlove worked for 1 2/3 innings in relief, allowing six runs on six hits. He struck out three UJ's batters.
Shane Groth (W, 5-1) earned the victory after pitching six innings for UJ. He allowed two runs on four hits. Saige Tyndall pitched in the seventh inning in relief, giving up a run on one hit.
The North Star Baseball Triangular continues on Saturday as Dakota State takes on Viterbo at 12 p.m., followed by a game versus Jamestown at 2:30 p.m. The games will be at Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown, N.D.
