JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Viterbo (Wis.) used a 5-run sixth inning explosion to break a 1-1 into a 6-1 victory over Dakota State (S.D.) Sunday afternoon in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball Triangular at Jack Brown Stadium, hosted by the University of Jamestown (N.D.).
DSU dropped their overall record to 4-29 and 4-18 record in league play. Viterbo, who went 3-0 record in the triangular versus the Trojans, improved their overall record to 13-39 and 10-13 NSAA conference record.
Dakota State earned the first lead of the game in the bottom second inning, thanks to a lead-off double by Connor Nagel. Hayden Klibbe followed up with a bunt single to advance Nagel to third base. Nagel scored on a stolen base attempt to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
The V-Hawks answered with a run scored in the top fourth frame. Adam Klos hit a single with one out. Nolan Glunz drilled a double and advanced Klos to third base. Brad Giss produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Klos as VU knotted the game at 1-1.
Viterbo exploded for five runs in the top sixth inning. Glunz led off with a single, followed by Giss' double to advance Glunz to third base. Adam Lowe reached safely on base caused by DSU's defensive error and allowed Glunz to score for VU 2-1 lead (Giss advanced to third base). Braxton Ghelfi hit a single to set up a bases loaded situation for the V-Hawks.
VU made it 3-1 when Brent Stoughtenger hit a single to score Giss. DJ Wilson added an RBI sacrifice fly to score Lowe to extend Viterbo's lead to 4-1.
The V-Hawks expanded their lead to 6-1 in the top sixth as Noah Bouley hit an RBI double and Evan Wenberg collected an RBI ground out.
Dakota State left a runner on first base in the final inning, securing the victory for Viterbo.
Nagel had a double, stolen base and a run scored for the Trojans. Alec Gannon, Klibbe and Christian Sanchez each tallied a single.
Noah Bouley, Klos and Glunz each collected two hits for the V-Hawks. Giss had a double and an RBI. Stoughtenger and Wilson each registered a hit and an RBI. Bouley and Wenberg also had an RBI.
Viterbo outhit Dakota State 11-4 in the game. The V-Hawks had seven runners left on base compared to the Trojans two runners left on base.
Andrew Dayton (L, 0-3) tabbed the loss after tossing 5 2/3 innings on the pitching mound for DSU. He gave up six runs (one unearned) on 11 hits. Jacob Yaeger pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings in relief.
John Costello (W, 1-4) earned the victory after working six innings for VU. He limited the Trojans to one run on four hits. Ryan Boelk pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief.
Dakota State concludes their regular-season schedule versus No. 16-ranked Jamestown (N.D.) at 5 p.m. Sunday.
