ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) returned back to PC Dome for the third consecutive week for another North Star Athletic Association Softball action Thursday evening. The NSAA's co-leader No. 16-ranked Jamestown (N.D.) erased DSU's first-inning lead, earning a doubleheader sweep over the Trojans by the scores of 3-1 and 9-2.
Dakota State fell to 12-19 overall record and 6-8 NSAA conference. Jamestown raised their overall record to 27-6 and 10-3 record in league play, tied with Valley City State for the conference's best record.
DSU looks to swing back in the winning column as they play Viterbo (Wis.) in the NSAA Softball doubleheader Friday morning. First game is set to start at 8 a.m. at PC Dome. The Jimmies play the V-Hawks on Saturday evening.
Game 1 – (16) Jamestown (N.D.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL
All the runs in the first game of the North Star's doubleheader were recorded in the first inning.
Dakota State grabbed the first lead of the game, thanks to a lead-off solo home run by Peyton Brokiewicz for 1-0 DSU lead. It was her sixth home run of the season and her ninth career home run at Dakota State.
Jamestown answered back with three runs scored in the bottom first inning. Emma Keller led off with a walk. She advanced to second base after Mikayla Frost's single. Tifani Schorzman followed up with an RBI double to score Keller as UJ knotted the game at 1-1 (Frost advanced to third base).
The Jimmies made it 2-1 after Morgan Geiszler's RBI single to score Frost with one out in the bottom first inning (Schorzman advanced to third on the play). Brittany Rheault recorded an RBI ground out to score Schorzman to extend UJ's lead to 3-1.
Both teams were unable to score for the rest of the game. The Trojans left a runner on first base when the game ended, securing the victory for the Jimmies.
Brokiewicz was 2-of-4 at the plate with a home run, double and drove in one run for DSU. Xitlali Lopez was perfect at the plate by going 3-of-3 with three singles. Nicole Stewart recorded a double. Tatum Ronke had a single. Kailee McFadden reached on base by a walk.
Frost was 2-of-3 at the plate with a run scored for UJ. Schorzman added a double and an RBI. Geiszler registered two singles and an RIB. Meghan Ramage had a double.
Both team tallied seven hits and left six runners on base in the game.
Lopez (L, 6-4) tossed a complete game, despite recording the loss for Dakota State. She allowed three runs on seven hits. She struck out four UJ's batters.
Rheault (W, 9-3) earned a complete game victory in the pitching circle for Jamestown. She limited the Trojans to one hits on seven hits.
Game 2 – (16) Jamestown (N.D.) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL
Dakota State jumped to a 2-0 lead in the opening inning of the second game, but Jamestown went to shut out the Trojans 9-0 for the rest of the game for a 9-2 victory.
McFadden reached on base by a walk with one out for DSU in the opening inning. Stewart blasted a 2-run home run to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead. Stewart recorded her sixth home run this season and currently holds the second-most career home runs with 14, three home runs short of tying the all-time home runs with 17 set by Brittany Hill from 2012-15.
Keller led off the Jimmies with a solo home run in the bottom half of the first inning, trimming DSU's lead to 2-1. UJ added two more runs – all with two outs. Schorzman reached on base by a walk, followed by Ramage's double to advance Schorzman to third base. Katie Reisdorfer hit a 2-RBI single to score Schorzman and Ramage as the Jimmies grabbed a 3-2 lead.
Keller added a 2-run home run to widen Jamestown's lead to 5-2 in the bottom second frame.
The Jimmies plated three runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Ramage's 2-RBI double. Reisdorfer added an RBI single to balloon UJ's lead to 8-2.
Jamestown made it 9-2 in the bottom sixth inning after an RBI single by Kelly Halverson.
Stewart was 2-of-2 at the plate with a double, single and drove in two runs for the Trojans. Kosman added a single. Brokiewicz, McFadden, Stewart, Kosman and Taylor Poe each registered a walk.
Keller smashed two home runs in the game and registered three RBIs for the Jimmies. Ramage added two doubles and two RBIs. Reisdorfer had three singles and three RBIs. Morgan Flann had two hits and a stolen base.
Jamestown outhit Dakota State 13-3 in the second game. UJ left nine runners on base compared to DSU six runners left on base.
Kelly Drake (L, 4-6) took the loss in the circle after pitching a complete game for the Trojans. She gave up nine runs on 13 hits.
Kat Miska (W, 7-1) earned the victory for the Jimmies. She worked for six innings and yielded two runs on three hits. Jasmine Pipella pitched a shutout seventh inning in relief.
