SALINA, Kan. – Dakota State (S.D.) held Haskell (Kan.) to negative .011 hitting percentage Sunday afternoon on the second day of the LaQuinta/Kansas Wesleyan Tournament, rolling to a 3-0 victory. The Trojans won by the scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-15 over the Fighting Indians at Mabee Arena.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 2-2. Haskell fell to 2-3 overall record.
Holding a 21-18 lead in the opening set, the Trojans took a 1-0 match lead after closing the set with a 4-1 scoring run for a 25-19 victory. Both teams struggled with hitting, with DSU hitting .078 (11 kills with 7 errors in 51 attempts) and Haskell with .021 hitting efficiency (10 kills with 9 errors in 47 attempts).
Dakota State used another strong closing run in the second set to extend their match to 2-0. Tied at 17-17, the Trojans used an 8-2 scoring run to secure another 25-19 victory. Kaylee Spreier had a pair of service aces, while Samantha Zell had a pair of kills during DSU's scoring tear.
The Trojans smashed 11 kills in the second set and registered a hitting percentage of .143 (7 errors in 28 attempts). The Fighting Indians were held to minus .045 hitting percentage (5 kills with 6 errors in 22 attempts).
Holding a slim 8-7 lead in the third set, Dakota State stormed with a 12-3 scoring run to widen their lead to 20-10. HINU could get no closer than eight points as the Trojans secured a three-set sweep with a 25-15 victory. DSU hit .269 in the third set (11 kills with 4 errors in 26 attempts) compared to HINU with a negative .042 hitting percentage (5 kills with 6 errors in 24 attempts).
Spreier led the Trojans' offense attack with nine kills and hit .471 hitting percentage. She also had three service aces. Maddie Polzin added six kills. Barbara Briceno and Gabby Herlyn each had five kills.
Nicole Sarringar collected 16 set assists for Dakota State. Rachel Johnson added 10 assists and eight digs.
Alwaise Villa led DSU's defense with 15 digs. She had three service aces. Briceno added 11 digs and two aces. Polzin, Zell, Spreier and Herlyn each recorded two block assists.
Alliyah Richards led the Fighting Indians with 11 kills. Cailey Lujan had six kills. Aline Barton registered 17 assists. Sophia Honahni had 14 digs.
Dakota State hit .143 in the match, smashing 33 kills with 18 errors in 105 swings. Haskell recorded 20 kills, but committed 21 attack errors in 93 attempts.
DSU had nine service aces in the match compared to HINU two aces.
The Trojans close out the tournament play versus Graceland (Iowa) scheduled for 4 p.m. today.
