Trojans shut down Saints for third straight volleyball victory

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) smashed 49 kills and held Presentation (S.D.) to just 27 kills Friday evening, cruising to a 3-0 North Star Athletic Association conference victory at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans won by the scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-22.

Dakota State won their third straight victory, raising their overall record to 8-7 and 2-2 record in North Star contests.  Presentation fell to 9-6 overall record and 2-2 NSAA conference record.

It was the second straight North Star conference victory for the Trojans, as well as the second straight win over a South Dakota NAIA team (defeated Dakota Wesleyan in four sets earlier this week).  The Trojans are 2-0 record on the current four-match home stand.

Dakota State earned its 14th win in the last 16 meetings with Presentation.

FIRST SET

Both Dakota State and Presentation went through seven ties through the first 18 points of the opening set.  The Trojans pulled away after using a 7-2 scoring run to break a 9-9 tie into a 16-11 lead.  DSU got kills from three different hitters – three by Maddie Polzin and a kill each by Barbara Briceno and Samantha Zell – during the scoring outburst.

DSU outhit PC 17-10 to secure a 25-19 set one victory, earning a 1-0 match lead.  The Trojans hit an impressive .239 (6 errors in 46 swings) compared to the Saints .128 hitting efficiency (5 errors in 39 attempts).

SECOND SET

Dakota State roared to an 11-3 lead over Presentation in the second set and never looked back to extend their match lead to 2-0.  At 5-3, the Trojans went on to score six consecutive points for an eight-point lead.

DSU hit a monstrous .556 hitting percentage in the second set, dominating PC with a 25-14 victory.  The Trojans collected 17 kills and committed just two attack errors in 27 attempts.  The Saints hit .091 with 9 kills and 6 attack errors in 33 attempts.

THIRD SET

Presentation and Dakota State tied and exchanged leads for the first 38 points in a see-saw third set, with the lead no bigger than two points by both teams.  Knotted at 19-19, The Trojans went on a 3-0 scoring run (a kill by Briceno, an attack error by PC and a kill by Anna Schwint) to open up a 22-19 lead.

Presentation could not get no closer than two points at 22-20, 23-21 and 24-22.  Polzin smashed a kill to secure a 3-0 match for the Trojans, recording a 25-22 victory.

DSU outhit PC 15-8 in the fourth set.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Polzin led Dakota State's offensive attack with 13 kills and recorded a .360 hitting percentage.  Briceno added her tenth double-double of the season, registering 11 kills and 12 digs.  Zell and Schwint each tallied eight kills.  Kaylee Spreier recorded six kills.

Rachel Johnson sparked the Trojans' offense with 21 set assists.  Nicole Sarringar earned a double-double of 20 assists and 10 digs.  Johnson and Sarringar each had a service ace.

Alwaise Villa collected nine digs for DSU.  Peyton Groft had eight digs.  Zell recorded five block assists.  Gabby Herlyn had four block assists.

Haylee Biel recorded nine kills for Presentation.  Kayla Wolfe added five kills. 

Maddie Goetz produced 15 set assists for the Saints.  Brooke Swanson added nine digs. 

Joely Roe had a match-high 23 digs for PC.  Biel had a solo block and two block assists.

Dakota State hit .270 in the match (49 kills with 16 errors in 122 attempts).  Presentation was held to .114 hitting efficiency (27 kills with 15 errors in 105 attempts). 

Both teams struggled from the serving line.  The Saints were 89.5 percent with six service errors in 57 serves.  The Trojans recorded 87.7 percent serving with two aces and nine errors in 73 attempts.

DSU had seven team blocks (14 block assists0 compared to PC four team blocks (one solo block, 6 block assists).

The Trojans collected 57 digs, while the Saints had 54 digs.

Presentation defeated Dakota State 3-0 in the junior varsity match (25-22, 25-21, 25-21).

UP NEXT

Dakota State continues their home stand with another North Star contest at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans host Mayville State (N.D.) with a junior varsity match at 10 a.m., followed by Trojan Days homecoming match at 12 p.m.

Presentation heads to No. 22-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) for a North Star match Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
