MADISON, S.D. – Viterbo (Wis.) outscored Dakota State (S.D.) 30-9 in points off turnovers, 34-10 inside the paint, 24-0 in second-chance points and 28-8 in bench points to earn a 75-65 North Star Athletic Association men's basketball conference action at DSU Fieldhouse Saturday evening.
The Trojans dropped their overall record to 7-15 and 2-4 NSAA conference record. The V-Hawks hit their 10th win of the season, improving to 10-11 overall record and 3-4 record in league play.
Trailing 7-5 early in the game, Brady Van Holland hit back-to-back 3-pointer followed Carson Rentz's 3-pointer and another basket by Van Holland sparked DSU's scoring 11-0 scoring outburst for a 16-7 lead with 13 minutes, 26 seconds on the clock.
Viterbo answered back with a 9-2 scoring run to cut DSU's lead to 18-16 after a basket by Jason Tichy with 9:30 left in the first-half.
After the Trojans went on a 5-0 run to break a 21-21 tie for a 26-21 lead, the V-Hawks stormed back with a 12-0 scoring run to regain their lead at 33-26 with less than two minutes to go in the first.
DSU closed the first-half with an 8-0 run in the final 1:47, thanks to a pair of free-throws by Brady Elder and back-to-back 3-pointers by Elder and Josh Conley.
The Trojans shot a blazing 54.5 percent from the field (12-of-22) in the first-half, including 8-of-14 from the 3-point line. The V-Hawks were 34.1 percent from the field (14-of-41) and 4-of-17 3-pointers. VU outrebounded DSU 13-1 on the offensive boards, outscoring the Trojans 18-0 in second-chance points.
Viterbo outscored Dakota State 15-7 in the first six-plus minutes of the second-half, earning a 48-40 after a basket by Cody Hoeth.
DSU rallied back with a 11-1 run to regain their lead at 50-49 after a 3-pointer by Elder (assisted by Anthony Costello). VU answered back on the following possession with a field goal by Tichy (V-Hawks led 51-50) and never trailed for the rest of the game.
Dakota State could not get any closer than two points at 55-53 with 7:51 left and 64-62 with 3:04 remaining.
The V-Hawks shut down the Trojans 7-0 in the final 1:56 of the game to secure the win.
Viterbo outscored Dakota State 42-31 in the second-half. VU was 16-of-33 from the field (48.5 percent) and held DSU to 35.5 percent from the field (11-of-31).
Van Holland led the Trojans with a game-high 23 points. He was 7-of-11 from the field, 6-of-8 from the 3-point arc (tied for sixth-best 3-point field goal percentage in the school record book) and converted all three free-throws. Elder and Rentz each added 11 points. Justin Folkers scored eight points. Josh Conley tallied six points off the bench.
Folkers grabbed nine rebounds and registered two blocks for Dakota State. Elder added five rebounds and stole the ball three times. Rentz contributed five assists. Cody Muilenburg produced four assists and recorded a game-high three blocks.
Tichy scored 21 points on his 9-of-17 field goal shooting for the V-Hawks. Cade Anderson posted a double-double of 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Jake Schroeckenthaler had 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Tyree Young had eight points, dished out a game-high nine assists and recorded four steals.
Jezzriah Burton had eight points and six rebounds for VU.
Dakota State shot 43.4 percent from the field (23-of-53) compared to Viterbo 40.5 percent (30-of-74). The Trojans drained 13 3-pointers in 30 attempts while the V-Hawks were 5-of-22 from the 3-point line.
VU was 10-of-15 free-throws (66.7 percent) compared to DSU 6-of-10 free-throws (60 percent).
Viterbo outrebounded Dakota State 47-32 in the game, including 17-3 on the offensive rebounds.
Dakota State concludes their first-half portion of the North Star conference schedule Sunday, hosting Waldorf (Iowa). Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
Viterbo faces Dakota State again on Friday to kick off the second-half of the NSAA conference schedule. The game is set to take place at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium with a tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
