Viterbo (Wis.) sweeps season series with Dakota State (S.D.)

La CROSSE, Wis. – Viterbo (Wis.) shot 50 percent from the field and drained 11 3-pointers Friday evening, cruising past Dakota State (S.D.) 93-60 in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) men's basketball conference game at R.W. Beggs Senior Gymnasium.  The V-Hawks, which defeated the Trojans six days ago at DSU Fieldhouse, swept the season series.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 8-16 and 3-5 NSAA conference record.  Viterbo moved to .500 with an overall record of 11-11 and 4-4 NSAA record.

The Trojans earned the first lead of the game after a basket by Brady Van Holland with nineteen minutes and seventeen seconds on the clock.

Both DSU and VU recorded two ties and a lead change in the first three-plus minutes before the V-Hawks went on the scoring run.  Tied at 4-4, the V-Hawks went on a 15-4 scoring surge for the first double digit lead of the game with 12:21 left in the first-half.

Dakota State could not get any closer than nine points at 19-10 after a basket by Van Holland with 11:40 on the clock. 

Viterbo outscored DSU 24-11 in the final 11:01 to widen their lead to 43-21 by halftime.  The V-Hawks shot 48.4 percent in the first-half (15-of-31) and shot 4-of-10 from the 3-point line.  VU was also 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.  Dakota State struggled from the field, shooting 30.3 percent (10-of-33) and missed all 13 3-point field goal attempts.  DSU was 1-of-2 free-throw in the first-half.

The V-Hawks maintained control for the rest of the game, outscoring the Trojans 50-39 in the second-half.  VU was 51.5 percent from the field (17-of-33), including 7-of-15 3-pointers.  DSU was 42.3 percent (11-of-26) and 4-of-13 3-pointers.

Brady Elder led the Trojans with 17 points (6-of-10 field goals and 3-of-5 3-pointers).  Justin Folkers added 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds.  Anthony Costello scored nine points off the bench.  Carson Rentz had seven points.  Van Holland had six points. 

Van Holland dished out two assists for DSU.  Rentz had four rebounds and two steals.  Cody Muilenburg had four points, three rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. 

Five players scored in double digits for VU, led by Jake Schroeckenthaler with a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds.  Cade Anderson, Jason Tichy and Tyree Young each added 13 points.  Young had four assists, three blocks and two steals.

Viterbo shot 32-of-64 from the field, including 11-of-25 from the 3-point line.  Dakota State was held to 35.6 percent (21-of-59) and 4-of-26 from the 3-point arc (15.4 percent).

VU was 18-of-20 from the free-throw line (90 percent compared to DSU 14-of-18 free-throws (77.8 percent).

The V-Hawks outrebounded the Trojans 44-28. 

Dakota State continues their action on the road Saturday evening, visiting Waldorf (Iowa) in another North Star Athletic Association conference contest.  Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at the Hanson Fieldhouse in Forest City, Iowa.
