FOREST CITY, Iowa – Waldorf (Iowa) outscored Dakota State (S.D.) 26-13 in the third period to earn an 84-70 North Star Athletic Association women's basketball conference victory at Hanson Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon. The Warriors completed a season series sweep over the Lady T's, with both teams meeting for the second time in six days.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 3-19 and 2-7 record in league play. Waldorf improved to 10-10 overall record and 5-4 NSAA conference record.
Alexis Robson made both free throw attempts to give DSU its first lead of the game at 2-0 with nine minutes and fourteen seconds on the clock. The Warriors went on a 9-0 run to earn a 9-2 lead after a 3-pointer by Taylor Fricke with 7:17 on the clock.
After DSU cut their deficit down to 11-6, WU scored eight straight points to balloon their lead to 19-6 with less than three minutes to go in the first period.
Dakota State answered back with an 8-0 run (back-to-back field goals by Taylor Volesky, followed by a basket each by Robson and Alexis Evans) in the final 2:19 of the first quarter, cutting Waldorf's lead down to 19-14.
WU shot 53.3 percent in the first ten minutes of the game (8-of-15) and held DSU to 30 percent (6-of-20 field goals).
The Lady T's extended their scoring run to 13-0 into the second quarter, knotting the game at 19-19 after a basket by Jessi Giles with 8:41 on the clock.
From there, Dakota State and Waldorf traded lead eight times and tied once for the rest of the second period. The Warriors held a 35-31 halftime edge over the Lady T's.
WU shot 43.8 percent (14-of-32 field goals) compared to DSU 41.9 percent (13-of-31 field goals) in the first-half.
Waldorf kicked off the third quarter with an 8-1 run to regain their double-digit lead at 43-32 with 7:27 on the clock. The Warriors shot 10-of-19 from the field, widening their lead to 61-44 by the end of the third period. DSU was 6-of-12 from the field in the first ten minutes of the second-half.
Trailing 63-48, the Lady T's went on a 10-2 outburst to cut their deficit at 67-58 with 6:18 to go. DSU could get no closer than seven points as WU used a 6-0 run to balloon their lead to 73-58 with 4:30 remaining.
DSU outscored WU 26-23 in the final quarter.
Waldorf was 56.3 percent from the field in the second-half (18-of-32). Dakota State was 48.5 percent shooting from the field (16-of-33).
Giles led the Lady T's with 23 points (9-of-17 field goals and 4-of-5 free-throws). Volesky added 13 points (6-of-8 field goals). Robson scored eight points. McKenzie Hermanson tallied seven points off the bench.
Volesky and Robson each grabbed six rebounds for DSU. Robson and Kelley Criddle each dished out two assists. Volesky stole the ball twice and registered two blocks.
Fricke poured in a game-high 26 points for the Warriors. She was 9-of-15 from the field, 3-of-5 from the 3-point line and converted 5-of-7 free-throws. Elizabeth Jenkins scored 14 points off the bench (7-of-9 field goals). Ameh Ogbemudia posted a double-double of 12 points and collected 11 rebounds.
Emily Haubrich had 11 points and contributed a game-high seven assists for WU. Morgan Straight had four assists. Kayley Cravens, Haubrich and Jenkins each had two steals.
Waldorf shot 50 percent overall from the field (32-of-64) compared to Dakota State 45.3 percent (29-of-64). The Warriors were 5-of-17 3-pointers while the Lady T's were 3-of-14 3-pointers.
WU was 15-of-25 from the free-throw line (60 percent), with 10-of-18 free-throws coming in the second-half. DSU was 9-of-15 free-throws (60 percent).
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they swing back home next weekend. The Lady T's play their final two regular-season home contests at DSU Fieldhouse, hosting Mayville State (N.D.) in the 'Ag Ball' game on Friday (Feb. 1). Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Next Saturday, DSU hosts Valley City State (N.D.) in the final regular-season home contest at 3 p.m.
