Trojans extend Chargers' volleyball losing streak to seven matches

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) shook off their offensive woes in the first two sets against Briar Cliff (Iowa), rolling to a 3-1 non-conference volleyball victory Tuesday evening at DSU Fieldhouse.  It was the annual Dig Pink volleyball match.  Set scores were 25-23, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-13. 

Dakota State improved their overall record to 15-8.  Briar Cliff suffered its seventh straight defeat, falling to 13-14 overall record.  The Trojans won their second straight meeting in the series meeting with the Chargers.

  • Dakota State and Briar Cliff battled back-and-forth in the first set, with the lead no bigger than four points twice by DSU (10-6 and 11-7).  The Chargers rallied back to score four straight points to knot the first set at 11-11. 
  • Trailing 18-16, DSU went on a 6-1 outburst to grab a 22-19 lead capped by Maddie Polzin's two straight kills.  The Chargers trimmed the Trojans' lead to 24-23, while Samantha Zell smashed a kill (assisted by Rachel Johnson) to secure the first set at 25-23 for a 1-0 match lead.
  • Both teams struggled hitting in the first set.  DSU outhit BCU 13-6.  The Trojans hit .023 (12 errors in 43 swings) compared to the Chargers negative .029 hitting percentage (7 errors in 34 attempts).
  • The Chargers started the second set with a 12-6 lead and widen to 20-12.  The Trojans mounted a comeback with a 4-0 run to cut BCU's lead to 20-16.  Briar Cliff would even the match at 1-1 after recording a 25-20 victory.
  • BCU outhit DSU 14-5 in the second set.  The Chargers, however, hit .098 (10 errors in 41 attempts).  The Trojans were held to negative .086 hitting percentage (8 errors in 35 swings).
  • Dakota State and Briar Cliff went through a see-saw battle in the third set before the Trojans pulled away.  Leading 16-15, DSU closed the third set with a 9-4 scoring run, sparked by Hanna Jellema's three kills. 
  • DSU hit .212 (10 kills with 3 errors in 33 attempts) in the third set to earn a 25-19 victory, regaining a 2-1 match lead over Briar Cliff.  The Chargers were held to .108 hitting percentage (13 kills with 9 errors in 37 attempts).
  • After falling behind at 2-0 in the fourth set, Dakota State scored six straight points thanks to three hitters (Jellema, Zell and Kelsey Pearson) recording at least a kill.  The Trojans continued its scoring surge by widening to their largest lead at 19-6 (including scoring seven consecutive points).
  • DSU closed the match with three straight kills, one from Pearson followed by back-to-back kills by Barbara Briceno for a 25-13 victory.  DSU registered a hitting efficiency of .294 (14 kills with 4 errors in 34 attempts) and held BCU to .147 hitting percentage (9 kills with 4 errors in 34 attempts).
  • Briceno fueled the Trojans with a double-double of 10 kills and collected 20 digs.  She also had two service aces.  Jellema smashed 10 kills.  Pearson added eight kills.  Polzin recorded six kills.
  • Johnson contributed 16 set assists for DSU.  Nicole Sarringar added 15 assists.  Both Johnson and Sarringar had five digs. 
  • Peyton Groft tallied 16 digs for Dakota State.  Zell recorded five block assists.  Polzin also had four block assists.
  • Noel Phillips and Victoria Gonzalez each had 10 kills for the Chargers.  Gonzalez posted a double-double with 11 digs.  Delaney Meyer had a double-double of 21 assists and 11 digs.  Maureen Imrie added 13 assists.  Harlee Wagoner and Grace Hanno each had 14 digs.
  • Gonzalez, Tyra Blue and Grace Whitlaw each had four block assists.
  • Dakota State and Briar Cliff each had 42 kills in the match.  The Trojans hit better than the Chargers.  DSU had .103 hitting percentage (27 errors in 145 attempts) compared to BCU .082 hitting percentage (30 kills in 146 swings). 
  • The Trojans were 94.7 percent from the serving line with three aces and five errors in 94 serves.  The Chargers committed 12 service errors and recorded just two aces in 81 attempts for a service percentage of 85.2.
  • BCU had 10 blocks compared to DSU eight blocks.  
  • Dakota State's junior varsity team improved to 9-3 overall record after a 2-0 sweep over Briar Cliff.  The Trojans won by the scores of 26-24 and 25-20.
