Jimmies hold off Trojans in DSU women's basketball season home opener

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was attempting to end former Dakota Athletic Conference and North Star Athletic Association's foe Jamestown's (N.D.) dominance in the all-time series meeting Saturday evening at DSU Fieldhouse.  A total of 11 lead changes, nine ties and lead no bigger than eight points, the Jimmies held off to defeat the Trojans 81-75 in DSU's women's basketball season opening game.

Jamestown – currently a member in the Great Plains Athletic Conference – remained undefeated this season with an overall record of 2-0, extending their winning streak to 23 games in the series meeting with Dakota State.

Dakota State stays home on Monday evening at DSU Fieldhouse as they host another GPAC conference foe, Briar Cliff (Iowa).  Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Jamestown (N.D.) 81, Dakota State (S.D.) 75 – FINAL

  • The first ten minutes of the game featured a back-and-forth battle with five ties and two lead changes for DSU and UJ.  Knotted at 18-18, Dakota State went on a 6-2 run to open a 24-18 capped by two straight baskets by Jessi Giles.
  • Jimmie Olivia Anderson made a free-throw with few seconds before the end of the first quarter, trimming DSU's lead to 24-19.
  • The Trojans shot 66.7 percent from the field in the first quarter (10-of-15 field goals) compared to the Jimmies 41.2 percent (7-fo-17 field goals).
  • DSU led 33-26 before UJ went on an 8-0 scoring run to regain their lead to 34-33 after a basket by Anderson with 2:17 left before halftime.  Savannah Walsdorf made a free-throw as the Trojans tied the game for the sixth time at 34-34 with 1:51 on the clock in the second period.
  • Morgan Koepsell made a basket with less than 30 seconds, giving Dakota State a 36-34 edge over Jamestown by halftime.
  • DSU shot a blazing 51.9 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes of the game, converting 14 baskets in 27 attempts.  Jamestown shot 40 percent (14-of-35 field goals).
  • Down 43-41 in the third quarter, the Jimmies went on a 10-0 scoring run to record the biggest lead of the game after a basket by Hannah DeMars for a 51-43 lead with 2:29 left in the third.  The Trojans answered back with a 3-pointer by Lindsey Vogl and a basket by Walsdorf to cut UJ's lead to 51-48 with 1:18 on the clock.
  • Jamestown outscored Dakota State 23-14 in the third quarter to earn a 57-50 lead.
  • The Trojans kicked off the fourth quarter with a 10-2 surge to regain their lead to 60-59 after a basket by Koespell with 7:06 left in the game.
  • DSU's Giles knocked down a pair of free-throws to record the ninth tie of the game at 65-65 with 4:11 remaining.  The Jimmies then went on to score eight straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers – to regain their largest lead of the game at 73-65 with 2:34 left.
  • Dakota State could get no closer than four points at two different occasions 77-73 after a pair of free-throws by Sidney Fick with less than 30 seconds to go and 79-75 after a field goal by Lexi Robson with less than 20 seconds remaining.
  • DSU outscored UJ 25-24 in the final quarter.
  • Giles poured in a game-high 25 points for Dakota State.  She was 9-of-15 from the field and 5-of-7 free-throws.  She also had five rebounds.  Walsdorf scored 17 points off the bench (7-of-12 field goals).  She stole the ball four times.
  • Koespell scored six points and pulled down five rebounds for the Trojans.  She also had two blocks.  Fick, Ashlyn Macdonald, Olivia Breske, Vogl and Riley Peters each scored five points.  Robson contributed three assists.
  • Five players scored in double-digits for Jamestown, packed by Hannah DeMars with 16 points.  Emma Stoehr scored 13 points off the bench.  Anderson and Noelle Josephson each had 12 points.  Macy Nilsen had 10 points. 
  • Josephson dished out four assists and stole the ball four time for the Jimmies.  Mackensi Higlin registered two blocked shots.
  • Dakota State shot 46.7 percent overall from the field (28-of-60 field goals) compared to Jamestown 40.5 percent (30-of-74).  The Jimmies were 8-of-33 3-pointers (24.2 percent), while the Trojans were 6-of-12 3-pointers (50 percent).
  • Both teams made 13 free-throws in the game.  DSU had one more free-throw attempts than UJ (18-17).
  • DSU outrebounded UJ 41-37 in the game.  Jamestown outscored Dakota State 32-12 in points off turnovers.  DSU outscored UJ 42-34 inside the paint and 30-26 in bench points.
