Warriors defeat Trojans in overtime 77-68

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) and Midland (Neb.) were unable to convert their scoring opportunity on their last possession of the regulation, remaining deadlocked at 65-65 Wednesday evening in a men's basketball non-conference action at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Warriors outscored the Trojans 12-3 to prevail to a 77-68 victory.

Dakota State's first win of the season came short as they remained winless in four games (0-4 overall record).  Midland, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, improved to 2-1 overall record.  MU has won the last six meetings with DSU.

The Trojans continue their action against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference in the NAIA-South Dakota Basketball Classic at Sanford Pentagon this weekend in Sioux Falls, S.D.  DSU takes on No. 6-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Saturday at 8 p.m., followed by another game on Sunday at 2 p.m. versus Mount Marty (S.D.).

Midland (Neb.) 77, Dakota State (S.D.) 68 – FINAL/OT

  • It was the tale of two halves, where Dakota State earned a 10-point halftime lead before Midland rallied back in the second-half.  The Warriors outscored the Trojans by 10 points in the final twenty minutes of the game to force overtime.
  • The Trojans and Warriors went through one tie and four lead changes in the first seven-and-half minutes of the game.  DSU led 13-12 through the first media timeout, despite shooting 35.7 percent from the field (5-of-14 field goals) while MU shot 66.7 percent (6-of-9 field goals).  MU committed seven turnovers early in the game.
  • Leading 15-14, the Trojans used a 5-0 run after a 3-pointer by Gavin Schipper and a basket by Josh McGreal to widen their lead to 20-14 with seven minutes to go in the first-half.
  • Dakota State used a 9-3 scoring outburst from holding a 24-20 lead into the first double-digit lead at 33-23 after a basket by Brady Van Holland with 45 seconds left.
  • Van Holland drained a 3-pointer by the halftime buzzer (assisted by Brady Elder) as the Trojans earned a 36-26 lead.
  • Midland shot 55 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes of the game (11-of-20 field goals).  Dakota State was 51.7 percent from the field (15-of-29 field goals) and made 5-of-9 3-pointers. 
  • The Trojans missed its first four field goals and two free-throws in the second-half, allowing the Warriors use an 8-0 scoring run to cut DSU's lead to 36-34 with 17:51 remaining.  DSU ended the scoring drought with a basket by McGreal (assisted by Cole Bruhn) with 17:24 on the clock.
  • Malik Martin hit a lay-up with 14:26 left as the Warriors regained their lead at 41-40.
  • Both teams battled back-and-fourth with four ties through four-plus minutes before the Warriors went on a run.  Midland widen their lead to 58-52 with 6:45 remaining after a basket by Jake Rueschhoff.
  • Trailing 65-61, Schipper made a basket with 1:42 to go as the Trojans cut MU's lead to 65-63.  Elder added a pair of free-throws with 1:14 remaining as DSU knotted the game at 65-65.
  • Both teams were unable to score in the final 1:14 of the game, extending the game into the extra period.  The Warriors outscored the Trojans 39-29 in the second-half. 
  • Midland kicked off the overtime period with a 5-0 run for a 70-65 lead with 3:04 left and never looked back.  The Trojans could get no closer than three points after a field goal by Van Holland with 2:34 remaining (DSU trailed 70-67).
  • The Warriors closed the game with a 7-1 run to secure the game.
  • MU was 3-of-5 from the field and 6-of-8 free-throws in the overtime period.  DSU was held to 1-of-7 field goal shooting and 1-of-2 from the free-throw line.
  • Van Holland scored a season-high 21 points off the bench for Dakota State.  He was 9-of-13 from the field.  Gare Ewefada added 12 points.  McGreal and Schipper each tallied nine points.  Anthony Costello scored seven points.
  • Elder had six points and recorded game-highs six assists and three steals for DSU.  He also had five rebounds.  Costello also pulled down five rebounds. 
  • Four MU players scored in double-digits, paced by Ryan Williams with a double-double of 29 points and collected 13 rebounds.  He was 10-of-23 from the field and 8-of-11 from the free-throw line.  Kylan Smallwood scored 13 points.  Rueschhoff and Emanuel Bryson each had 10 points.
  • Rueschhoff had six rebounds and four assists for the Warriors.  Bowen Sandquist added five rebounds and four assists.  Smallwood collected six rebounds.
  • Midland shot 54.9 percent overall from the field (28-of-51) and 3-of-17 from the 3-point line.  Dakota State shot 43.3 percent (26-of-60) and drained 8-of-22 3-pointers.  MU was 18-of-25 free-throws (72 percent) compared to DSU 8-of-13 free-throws (61.5 percent).
  • The Warriors took advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Trojans 44-21.  MU outscored DSU 9-0 in second-chance points and 46-30 inside the paint.
  • Dakota State outscored Midland 9-3 in points off turnovers and 32-20 bench points.
