No. 4 V-Hawks hand Trojans first NSAA volleyball defeat

MADISON, S.D. – Nationally-ranked No. 4 Viterbo (Wis.) handed Dakota State (S.D.) its first North Star Athletic Association conference volleyball defeat of the season, winning in four sets Saturday afternoon at DSU Fieldhouse.  After the Trojans took the first set 25-19, the V-Hawks held on to win the next three sets by the scores of 26-24, 25-17 and 25-21.

DSU's, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, season-high six-match winning streak came to an end, falling to 11-7 overall record.  Viterbo bounced back in the winning column after a 3-1 defeat at No. 15-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) Friday evening, lifting their overall record to 19-4.

Dakota State, Bellevue and Viterbo are in a three-way tie for first-place in the North Star Athletic Association conference standings with a 5-1 record.  The Trojans visit Bellevue in a mid-week conference action on Wednesday.  First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Gordon Lozier Center in Bellevue, Neb.

Viterbo stays on the road on Wednesday evening, visiting Waldorf (Iowa) at 7 p.m. in Forest City, Iowa.

(4) Viterbo (Wis.) 3, (RV) Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL (19-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-21)

  • Dakota State never trailed in the opening set, rolling to a 25-19 victory.  The Trojans raced to an 11-4 lead.  After the V-Hawks trimmed DSU's lead to 22-19, Dakota State took advantage of VU's three straight hitting errors for a 25-19 victory and 1-0 match lead.
  • DSU hit .281 in the opening set, smashing 13 kills and committed four attack errors in 32 attempts.  VU was held to .083 hitting efficiency (12 kills with 9 errors in 36 attempts).  The Trojans tallied four blocks (8 block assists) compared to the V-Hawks zero blocks.
  • Dakota State used another fast start in the second set, leading as many as six points after an attack error by the V-Hawks (13-7 DSU led).  With DSU leading 23-19, VU went on to score three straight points to cut their deficit to 23-22.
  • Maddie Polzin ended the drought to give DSU a set point at 24-22 with a kill.  Viterbo went on to save a set point and closed the set with a 4-0 surge for a 26-24 win (including scoring seven points in the last eight rallies – 7-1 closing run), evening the match at 1-1.
  • Both teams struggled offensively in the second set with both teams recording 13 kills.  The V-Hawks committed 10 attack errors in 50 swings (.060 hitting percentage), while the Trojans hit .104 (8 errors in 48 attempts).
  • Dakota State and Viterbo went through a see-saw battle in the first 16 rallies in the third set, knotting at 8-8.  The V-Hawks went on a 10-4 scoring run to take an 18-12 lead.  The Trojans could not get no closer than five points at 22-17 as the V-Hawks secured the third set by scoring the final three points, claiming a 25-17 victory. 
  • VU hit an impressive .406 hitting percentage (15 kills with 2 errors in 32 attempts) and held DSU to .128 hitting percentage (11 kills with 6 errors in 39 swings).
  • Down 14-11 in the fourth set, Dakota State stormed back with a 6-0 scoring run to grab a 17-14 lead. 
  • Viterbo closed the game by scoring the final eight points of the fourth set – thanks to four kills by Katie Frohmader – winning the match at 3-1 after a 25-21 victory.
  • Viterbo outhit Dakota State 19-11 in the fourth set.  The V-Hawks hit .289 (6 errors in 45 attempts) while the Trojans hit .116 (6 errors in 43 swings).
  • Samantha Zell led the Trojans' offense attack with 12 kills.  Barbara Briceno added a double-double of 10 kills and 18 digs.  Polzin smashed nine kills.  Kelsey Pearson had eight kills.
  • Nicole Sarringar and Rachel Johnson each contributed 20 set assists for Dakota State.  Peyton Groft had 15 digs.  Payton Johanneson had seven block assists.  Hanna Jellema tallied four block assists.  Polzin and Zell each had three block assists.
  • Four VU hitters recorded double digits kills, paced by Frohmader with a match-high 18 kills.  Maya Roberts added 12 kills.  Kenzie Winker had 11 kills.  Rekha Drevlow tallied 10 kills.
  • Lauryn Sobasky posted a double-double of 22 set assists and 14 digs for the V-Hawks.  Rachel Frankowski recorded a match-high 21 digs.  Jenna Phillips had 12 digs, while Adrianna Reinhart had 10 digs.  Mariah Calkins had four block assists.
  • Viterbo outhit Dakota State 59-48 in the match.  The V-Hawks hit .196 (27 errors in 163 swings) compared to the Trojans .148 hitting efficiency (24 errors in 162 attempts). 
  • DSU had 11 blocks in the match (1 solo, 20 assists), with eight total blocks coming in the first two sets.  VU recorded seven blocks (14 assists).
  • The V-Hawks were 97.9 percent from the serving line, recording two aces and two errors in 94 serves.  The Trojans registered a service percentage of 95.5 percent (4 aces and 4 errors in 88 attempts).
